ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Aug. 16, The report current yesterday that a rupture had occurred between Italy and Morocco, and that the Italian Minister at Tangiers had to lower his flag, is now known to have no foundation. Aug. 17, Dr McGee, Bishop of Peterborough, who for some time past has been in a critical state of health, is .now recovering. The Australian freight ring question is exciting attention in commercial circles. Aug. 18. The launch of a torpedo boat, which has been built for the Victorian Government, took place at Cheswick to-day. The ceremony was performed by the Right Hon H. 0, E. Childers, after whom the boat was named. In the House ot Commons last night, Mr Gladstone was questioned as to the intentions of Government regarding the future of New Guinea. In reply, the Premier stated that as Government refused to ratify the annexation of that island by Queensland, it was unnecessary to say anything about the future. The Government was satisfied that there was no fear of a claim to the island being made by any foreign Power, Aug. 19.
Many influential colonists were present at the ceremony of launching the large Victorian gunboat. Amongst them were Colonel Scratchley, Sir John Hall, Major Disney, Thos. Tapper, of Canada, etc, The christening was performed by Mrs Childers. Mr Murray Smith, Agent-General for Victoria, in his speech said that the colonies were determined to defend their own shores; but, while they were devotedly loyal to the Empire, the Imperial Government must be prepared to recognise their wants, and even to listen to occasional demands for annexation. The Right Hon Mr Childers, ia his speech attributed bis success in politics in England in a large measure to his Colonial training, and professed himself greatly attached to Victoria, He said it was the duty of England to maintain the Colonial connection, and the Government had no desire to shirk its duty towards the colonies because the policy demanded might sometimes be rather inconvenient, The Chimborazo’s cargo of meat has arrived in splendid condition. The Sultan favors the Palestine Canal project. CoPINHAQKN, Aug. 16. Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales arrived here to-day on a visit to the King of Denmark, and was received by the populace with much enthusiasm. Paris, Aug. 16. Latest news to hand from Tonquin states that the French Commander bad decided that the bombardment of the town of Hue should commence on the 13th inst., when active operations were to be resumed against the Anamites. Rom, Aug. 16. His Holiness the Pope has appointed Dr Brownless, Vice-Chahcellor of the Melbourne University, to be a knight of the Order of Pius IX. Berlin, Aug, 16. Disquieting reports are in circulation regarding the health of Prince Bismarck. No official bulletins, however, have yet been issued. Capetown, Aug. 18. No intelligence of a reliable nature has been received from Zululand regarding the report of the defeat of Usibepu by Cetewayo’s adherents, and doubts arc entertained as to its authenticity. Bombat, Aug. 18. During the past fortnight two hundred deaths from cholera have occurred here, and the disease is now assuming the character of an epidemic. Stringent measures have been adopted to prevent a further development. AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Sydney, Aug. 19. A telegram has been received her* to-day from England, announcing that the Most Reverend R. B. Vaughan, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, died suddenly at Liverpool yesterday. The intelligence has been received with universal regret.
