GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting was held in the office of the Boird, Geraldine, on Tuesday last. Present—Messrs W. U. Slack (Chairman pro tern), Deßenzy, Flatraan, and Kelland, MINUTES. The minutes of the previous and special meetings were read and confirmed. NOTICE OP MOTION. In accordance with a notice of motion tabled during last ordinary meeting,.it was proposed by Mr Platman, seconded by Mr Deßenzy and carried—' That the resolution passed at the meeting on June last, re Mr Jones's road, be rescinded. TENDERS. The following tenders for various contracts were opened and considered : Contract No. 68—Fairfield Road, J. Corkery, LSO ; W. Hopkinson, L 39 10s ; J, Webb, L 39 10s ; A. McColl, L 39 ; G. Piskey L 22 7s 6d (accepted). Contract No. 69—Cainnbell's Road. J Webb, L 36 ; A McColl, L 35 (accepted). Contract No 70—Orari Station road. T Sugrue, LlO5 ; P Burke, LlO5 ; M Corkery. L 95 ; F Molloy, LB9 2s 6d ; J Webb, £B9 (accepted). Contract No 71—Waihi Road. P Burke, LIOO ; T Sugruo, L 95 ; J Webb, L 63 ; T Corkery, L6O ; F Molloy, L 59; (accepted) ; M Lawlor, L3B. J Walsh, Ll 6 ; Jas Beckley, Ll2 (accepted). CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was then read : From W. Postlethwaite, Esq., M.H.R., in reference to the converting of the railway bridge into a stock and passenger bridge. 9e suggested that the funds could be obtained from Government for a period of fifteen years. This course could also be adopted in regard to the Orari railway bridge. The amount of cost to be divided between the Geraldine and Temuka Road Boards. The members of the Board present remarked that this was the first they had heard of the matter, and decided to defer it for further consideration.

From Mr A. Kelraan, stating that he had heard that protective works were to be erected on the west side of the Waihi stream, and gave notice that he should hold the Board responsible should any damage be done to his property. He suggested that a depitation of members of the Board should visit the spot with their Overseer. It was decided that the members of the Board should meet Mr Kelman on Thursday week at 11 a.m. From Mr Tripp, urging the necessity of employing two surface men on works for a fortnight or so.

The same was referred to the Overseer to report upon. From the same, intimating that the Mount Peel Road Board was applying, through the Geraldine County Council, to get the road from Robb's hut marie a main roarl, and requesting the Geral dine Road Board to ask tor the same fnm the Board's boondary to Geraldine (o be a continuation of the main road to Burke's Pass.

The Chairman stated that on that letter being recmed, he had called a special meeting of the Board, when the following resolution was passed :—' That alter due consideration the Geraldine Roid Board does not see the necessity of having the Beautiful Valley Road declared a main read, under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act of last session.'

From the Geraldine Conntv Council, asking for a rptnrn of small birds killed and eggs destroyed in the Geraldine district.

It was decided to forward the return as soon as possible. From the same, asking if the Council had to pay one-half share of cost of RangiUte bridge, would the Geraldine

Road Board contribute LIOOO out of its ordinary fund.

Proposed by Mr Dußenzy, seconded by Mr Platman and earned—' That this Board cannot comply tvith the request of the Geraldine County Council to contribute LIOOO towards the repairs of the Rangitata traffic bridge.' Prom Mr 0. G. Bradley, offering to purchase the handrails that were washed »way from> the bridge near the store at Hilton. The Overseei was instructed to inspect the timber. From Mr M. Lawler, asking for fencing material for reserve joining section No 28,445 and reqeusting that a cutting be made on part of the section. It was decided that the applicant have the fencing material asked for, and the Overseer was requested to see to the cutting, From Mr T. Clayton, drawing the attention of the Board to the ba 1 state of the road from the hotel to the Rangitata railway station, and asking that it be formed at the same time as the main road was being done, The Overseer was instructed to apply to the railway authorities asking permission to form the road, part of which is on the railway reserve.

From Messrs Moore Bros., asking the Board to form the remainder of the road between their l&nd and Mr Sealy's section, a part of which had been formed last year.

It was decided that the work should be done as requested. The same applicants also asked the Board to improve the crossing at Russell's Creek, by reducing the cutting. The Board decided to do the same.

From W, Postlethwaite, Esq., M.H.R., re the railway crossing. From Mr Bolton, Temuka, offering poisoned wheat tor the destrnction o small birds, at 15s 3d for measured bushel, delivered at the Temuka railway station. The offer was declined.

A discussion ensued as to the practicability of raising the price offered by the Board for eggs and birds. Ultimately it was Proposed by Mr Kelland, seconded by Mr Flatman, and carried—' That in order to encourage the destruction of small birds, this Board will, during the coming season, give sixpence per dozen for young birds and threepence per dozen for eggs. The members of the Board will receive and pay for eggs and birds.'

From Mr White, solicitor, Timaru, enclosing account for legal expanses incurred.

The same was held over till the return of Mr Postlethwaite from Wellington, as he had the matter in hand previously. From the Oaraaru Barb Wire Company, enclosing: a list of prices of wire, specimens of which were also sent. It was decided that should any wire of this description be required, to order it from the Company, From the Temuka Road Board, asking information relating to a sum of money said to have been han.Ud over to the Geraldine Road on account of sales of reserves situate between the Orari and Rangitata rivers ; asking what amount had been received, and what the Board estimated was the share belonging to the Temuka Road Board.

The Clerk was instructed to reply to the effect that Mr Postlethwaite had been applied to, to ascertain the necessary information. From Mr T. Hardcastle, junr., stating that since he had been in possession of his land at Woodbury he had suffered severely from flood water, and would strongly object to allow any attempt to force more water on his land. The letter was read.

Prom Mr Twomey, proprietor of the Geraldine Guardian,, in reference to his account. The Clerk stated that the same had been attended to. ADJOURNMENT. The Board then adjourned for an hour, and on resuming the following business was transacted : DEPUTATIONS. Mr Keid waited on the Board in reference to an amount due by him to the Board on his contract for tho quarter, asking for a month to pay it in. The Board decided not to allow any more timber to be cut on this particular bind, and that on account of Mr Reid's recent illuess they look over the debt. Messrs Taylor and Holloway interviewed the Board relative to the diam from their sections. The Chairman intimated that it had been proposed to call a public meeting to consider the drainage system for the town, and the Board was in favor of such movement.

The Overseer remarked hs was not in favor of draining into tho creek. He would suggest that a drain should be carried into the riverbed, and a tank sunk to receive the matter that would run down it. When the river was low the liquid would filter through the shingle, and should it become filled with r>fu-e matter it could.then be emptied eut. The deputation wan requested to sound the public mind on the matter, and if necessary to c ill a public mw-ting to consider the question at issue. Mr Holloway asked permission to erect a shade in front of his shop window, similar to that used at Tanker's.

The reqiest war granted, subject to the approval of the Engineer. Mr K P Wei's, interviewed the Board, asking for ft culvert 'o be placed in a gul'y near Carrig's land. If this were do:.ft it would greatly eawe the gradient. The matter whs 1-ft to the Overseer to improve the gully in question. Mr Lewis waited on the Board, asking foi a boundary road to b« aad«.

The Board decided not to improve the road at present, as the traffic would not justify the outlay. Mr Golden asked the Board to let to him a certain reserve adjoining his section. The Board granted the request, the Overseer to draw up agreement for same ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £555 4s 9d were passed for payment. overseer's report. The Overseer's report was read and dealt with as follows . Re Meredith's application for road to be cleared of Manuka scrub, and drained and shingled. The Board decided that the advantage gained does not justify the cost. The same decision was arrived at in reference to Mr Hammond's road. Mee's road, Four Peaks, re road to be opened through Mr Walker's land. The Overseer to write to Mr Walker thereon.

The road near Captain Temple's to be repaired by Burface men. Re the township drain. Deferred. Mr Taylor to agitate for part payment from the inhabitants INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES' REPORT.

The Inspector of Nuisances reported that there were no nuisance cases to report in the tov»D and neighborhood of Geraldine. .Though deaths had been more numerous than during previous months, These were not of an epidemic nature, there were some cases of scarlatina and low fever at Pleasant Valley and Hilton, This being all the business the meeting terminated.
