DRAINAGE SYSTEM IN GERALDINE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l see that the GaraUina Roi.d Board are at taking steps to hive he nuisance removed from the back of < h<* G»mldine Hotel, and Tasker and C ».*» 'mainess premises, and not before it was need* I, but ! o my mind the ol i spying will he verified, * that the rente ty wifi be worse than the nuisance.’ Taking it for granted that the sewer will take the direction where certain tunes are laid, the out'et will be in a gully whi'-h runs through the town sections recently surveyed by Government and wlm h will be V thrown open for sale shortly, Abo. further down it runs through Muslin’s township, which h qirte as thlkly populated as the town‘hip* proper. Of course I do not kno v what is the drainage scheme the Board hive adopted, but, X cert duly would suggest that what is done noc should he done permanently, and in such a wav that the nuisance will be removed and not thrown on the inhab touts in the lower township, for it is a we'lknnwn fact that there are a greater number of people residing in the lower than the upp u r townshhi Questions like these tnav arise (1) Wdl the newly surveyed Government sections sell as well with i.h • filth of a sewer rnnn'ng through them, ex osed a"d stagnated in the holes in the gully ; (2) Will the Road B >ard b# liable for any damages for turning the liquid of a sewer into a Watercourse, where hitherto only storm water lias ran, which runs through certain ornamental • rounds in its passage to tin river? f 3) Would it not bo-better to drain direct into the river, going down the main street for a certain distance, and then, branch off Into the river, where there is no inhabitants to annov, and use some d'sinfecfant r.t the outlet ? (4) Will the drain pipes to be u->ed be largo enough, or at any time till up, unless some means ■ire used to keep them from filling up? f 5) Will the work t'*e Boird contemplate now form pvt and fit in with a general drainage scheme which wdl ultimately ho adopted? (6) Would it be out of ■ilice for tin B >a'd to call a pub'in meeting of all those rateooyers interested lu* fore anything is done, or before the w< rk is let ? - I am, etc. One Interested.
PROPOSED ABOLITION 1 OP THE GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.
Mr Headit' , b,—ln ruling report of last mating Geraldine Cownty Gowned T Rftß that GereMineand Mount Peel Roxd Boards are likely to get off with pavin ' lion’s share towards Ran- ■ itata bridge repair*, for if the reports correct as puW.sh* 1 in paper, a motion was passed to ask these two Boards to pay LlOOOleach, leaving: about I suppose about LISOO to he pail by three or four other Road B *nrls each having bigger districts than the two first named. Of course it would be persump'U's for me to say how this motion came to be passed, but I think it could be gest at twice, for you may remember with ras that soma time ago a member of the name of Moodle (or something like this) wanting to do away with the Cowncil altogether, and this happ»nel jus - after the two Councils ha I a sore" at the opening of the Pangitnta Bridge, «nd payrnentof L3od() odd was talked about. If my memory does not fail, the resolution was not carried, and; life next best course to adopt was to ask these
two Boards to pay L2OOO out ot the Council’s share, and if their resolution fails, which I expect it will unless the two B< ards are more foolish than on other mutters, then this gentleman will move attain to levy a special rate which fall on these unlucky Boards again. I say unlucky in having such a big bridge as the Eangitate to look after. .Now, Sir, I feel inclined to give a bit of advice (and this is where my persumptuousness comes again, but I canna help it), and that is to keep the Cownty Cowncil alive and ask them to take over all the big Bridges in the Cownty, and for them to ask Iload Boards to spot out all roads that they think should bo maintained by Cownty as a whole. You mun understand mo I am not going in for Cowncil having a whole lot of Hmgineers and such like, but when anything wants doing to these bridges and main roads the Boards to receive authority from Cowncil to do the work, payment to come out of County’s pocket. If I wasn’t in such a hurry I should say more, but iiaving to do a job that’s worse than sweeping a chimney must say good morning.—l am, etc., Clodhopper.
