AN ACTRESS AND HER ADMIRER
The London correspondent of the Post writes—The English and American papers are full of a romantic story about Alice May, whom I daresay you remember acting in New Zealand some years ago. Miss May captivated a wealthy colonist named James Williams when she played in Melbourne, and this estimable person has followed her about ever since the actress came to England and obtained an engagement at the Alhambra. She had, naturally enough, forgotten the episode of Mr Williams when, after playing a month or two, a bouquet, accompanied by a card which recalled the Melbourne episode, was left at her stage door. It transpired that Williams, unable, he said, to live without sight of her, had sold off his business and started as soon as possible after she left Melbourne for London. During the Alhambra engagement Williams was at the theatre nightly, but the run of the piece came to an end at last, and Miss May (without informing her adorer) sailed for New York, with the idea of making a protracted tonr in the States, A week or two ago Miss May was rehearsing 1 Satanella’ at the Standard Theatre, New York, when a card was brought to her, and she once more read the familiar inscription “James Williams ” Her devoted adorer had once more crossed the ocean to be near h?r« and as soon as the Standard Theatre box office was opened, it is said a second row stall was booked in the name of James Williams for the run of the piece. It has now transpired that Miss May has long been a married woman.
