The action against the Rev. A. McOnnochie (formerly Incumbent of St Alban’s, and who was appointed to the benefice of fet Peter’s, London Docks, in January last) for illegally practising the Romish ceremony at the former church was concluded to day. A final sentence of deprivation was pronounced, and the defendant was condemned to pay the costs of the proceedings. A doctor and forty hospital assistants have proceeded from India to Egypt to render assistance in the efforts which are bring nude to stop the spreading of cholera.
July 24.
In the House of Commons last night Mr Gladstone made the promised statement as to the course which Government intended to pursue regarding the provisional agreements which had been signed by Mr Childers and Count do Lesseps for the construction of a second canal through the Isthmus of Suez. Government, the Premier stated, decided not to ask Parliament to sanction the agreements in their present form, since they had been generally disapproved of by commercial and shipping interests. Mr Gladstone added that Government had arrived at this decision in order that time might the obtained for considering a better scheme, and one by which the canal would ultimately be brought under the control and management of an International Commission.
It has transpired that Count do Lesseps has written a letter to Mr Gladstone announcing that the Suez Canal Co. bad decided to undertake the construction of a second canal, and that they will introduce a reduction in the tariff, as specified by himself and Mr Childers.
