MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held in the Road Board Office, Peel Forest, on Friday the 20th inst. Members present —Messrs G. J. Dennistoun. C, G. Tripp, J. Heney and R. Mackay. In the absence of the Chairman, Mr Tripp was voted to the Chair. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. BANGITATA ROAD. Mr Denuistoun informed the Board that he, together with Mr Mackay, had waited on the Geraldine , Hoad Board with a view of coming to some satisfactory arrangement with reference to the Rangitata Station Road, and that that Board fully agreed to the proposal made by the Mount Peel Board, and passed a resolution to the effect that the road be put into a good state of repair, both Boards paying an equal share of the cost, and that afterwards the road should be kept in repair at the cost of the Geraldine Board. Resolved ‘ That the thanks of the Board he accorded to Mr Dennistonn and Mr Mackay for conducting the matter so successfully.’ TENDERS. Tend ers for No. 10 contract, improving the sidling cutting in Peel Forest, nm being considered satisfactory, and no definite arrangement having been arrived at with the owner of the adjoining land, the contract was withdrawn, and the Overseer was instructed to. prepare fresh specifications for reducing the gradient at the top of the cutting, confining the excavation to the road reserve, CORRESPONDENCE. The’following correspondence was read and considered From the Chief Surveyor, stating that there is a road laid off through Section 28370 at Sherwood Downs, as indicated on the Road Board map, and enclosing an enlarged tracing showing the position of the pegs. From the same stating that the bouir daries of the Mount Peel road district as defined in a late issue of the Gazette, are the correct boundaries. From the District Auditor, offering suggestions with regard to the method of keeping the Board’s accounts. From Mr William Ashby, submitting a price at which he would sell a roadway through section 5762 in the Orari Gorge. Resolved —‘ That Mr Ashby’s terms be accepted, and that the Overseer make arrangements for having the road surveyed as soon as possible.’ From the Hon J. B. A. Acland, requesting leave of absence during the session of Parliament,

The request was granted. From Mr R. T. Button, requesting per mission to lay a tramway across the Main road in Peel Forest.

Resolved—‘ That the request be granted upon condition that no obstruction to traffic be caused.’ From Mr J. Hitch, in’reference to getting a road to sections 30203 and 31664, at Raincliff, as at present it is impossible to get to the land. The Clerk was directed to reply, and and inform Mr Hitch that the Board is prepared to make the surveyed road passable.

Prom Mr Eugene Lorgelly, calling attention to. the state of the ford on the road leading to his place. The Overseer stated that the statement made by Mr Lorgelly was a gross misrepresentation of the state of the road, as all the damage done by the late flood bad been substantially repaired, and the ford was at present in very good repair.

Resolved— ‘ That the Clerk acknowledge the receipt of the letter, and draw Mr Lorgelley’s attention to the misstatement mace by him.’ From Messrs Morris and Gall, Fairlie Creek, submitting prices at which they were prepared to supply horse-feed for 12 months.

From the Clerk to the Geraldine County Council, forwarding a copy of the county electoral roll for the Mount Peel riding, for inspection of ratepayers. INTERVIEW. Mr W. Wheelband had an interview with the Board in reference to the plantations under his charge, aud represented the damage done to the young trees by hares, and asked that some allowance bo made for such damage. .Resolved— That the Board cannot at present make any allowance, as the trees in many instances were too small, and planted at the wrong season of the year.’

INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CLERK.

Resolved— ‘ That the Clerk write to the Members for Geraldine and Gladstone, drawing their attention to the extended voting power given to the county electors by the present valuation rolls. Under former valuations the basis of voting was computed upon the annual value of property, but the Telia now supplied by the Pro-

perty Tax Office give only the capital value, and die voting power given on that valuation ; consequently proprietors who were formerly only entitled to one vote can in many instances exercise five votes. The Board considers the former system preferable,’

The Clerk was further instructed as fol-

lows :

‘To write to Hie Geraldine Bead B "trd stating that this Board is taking steps for having the direct road from Fairlie Creek to Geraldine, via Opnha, bri Ige,proclaim *d amain road, and to ask them to tike action for having ...thjijj part,qf r lhe same road in the Geraldine district i>r-n l-iiine>l ‘ To write to the Member for QU Intone representing the great evils of ginse growing on river-be Is and waste hands, and ask if some provisions could not he made in the Amended Counties Act to abate the evil.’ The Oveiseer was directed l« give notice to all persons having gorse growing on roads adjoining their properties to grub up and clear the same. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the ammnt of £1265 3s Id were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
