HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. In the House on Monday.
Mr Tola moved the second reading of The Contempt of Courts Bill which was carried. Its object is to restrict the power of Judges. The second reading of Sir G. Grey’s Charitable Gifts Duty Exception Bill was also agreed to. The School Committees Election Bill was considered in Committee. On Tuesday, The New Zealand Native Land Settlement BUI was withdiawn bv Mr DeLatour.
Replying to Mr Larnach, the Hon. Mr Dick said that such compound words as *New-Zealand’ were charged by telegraph two words when they were written as such, but when written as one word they were only charged as one. Some other bills having been introduced and read a first time, the debate on the annexation question was resumed by Mr R»'lleston, and at 5.30 p.ra. it was adjourned. Sir George Grey spoke to a question of privilege. A petition was read in the afternoon containing serious charges against the promoters of the New Zealand Native Land Company Empowering Bill who were accused of having purposely kept secret the purport of the Bill, in order that it migiit be hurried through the House in an unconstitutional manner, Having been rend by the Clerk it would, it seemed, appear in Hansard. The persons accused not having had an opportunity for replying, ho thought it was improper to Lave the petition printed in Hansard.
After a long debate the Speaker said the petition would not be printed in Hansard.
The House then went into Committee of bupply. A despute arose over the Resident Magistrate of Collingvvood, He bad been a member of the last Parliament and, despite the Disqualification Act, under which no member of Parliament can take a Government office for 12 months after he resigns, the Government appointed him Resident Magistrate. After a long discussion the item was passed. The sura of £l5O for expenses for the Timaru R.M. was reduced to £IOO. The Government wanted to increase the Inspector of Gaols’ salary by}£loo, but on a division this was not allowed. Mr Sheehan accused the Government cf trying to build a central prison at Mount Cook, Wellington, despite the oft repeated decisions of the House. This ihe Ministry denied, and the motion to strike the items for that gaol having been lost, the House adjourned at 2.30 a.m.
COURSING.
GERALDIME COURSING CLUB,
Yesterday the Club held a meeting on tho property of L. Walker, Esq., near Fairfield Bush, on the Four Peaks estate. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, the attendance of sportsmen and others was very good. The draw for the various events took place on the previous evening at the Bush Hotel, Geraldine. The Geraldine Cup, for an unlimited number of all aged dogs at £3 3s each. Winner, £lO 10s ; runner-up, £5 ss. FINAL COURSE. Mr M. Conolly’s Queen led Mr Swinton’s Royal Maid, and won easily. The Maiden Puppy Stakes, for an unlimited number of puppies (winners of and runners-up for other puppy stakes excepted) at £2 2s each. Winner, £7 7s, Mr T.Swinton’s Kiss-Me-Quick won a long course easily, never once letting Mr T, Farrell’s Venus in. The Secretary received notice to withhold the stakes, on account of the winner being suspected of not being a maiden puppy, and they are withheld accordingly. This will have to be decided before 2nd of August next. Hares were too plentiful.
