THE FRENCH IN MADAGASCAR.
Admiral Pierre and his force on the 14th June captured Tamatave and destroyed the tolls at Point Motamba and Terenive. The Malagasy envoys are now in London, aod say the demands of the French were preposterous. They knew that Admiral Pierre's ultimatum would be rejected. Tho Queen of Madagascar gave strict orders not i) return the fire of the French She recalled most of her troops to the capital, acd only 200 remained at Tamatave to maintain order, Tamatave is defended by merely one mud fort, mounting four old muzzle-loading guns. The Queen is now shut off from the foreign powers. It will tak:s the French at least five months to march to the capital, and there is sufficient food there for a seige of several months. The Hovas have at the copitil 7000 disciplined troops, most of whom aie armed witn Remington rifles, and the nation will fight to the bitter end. Meanwhile it is to he hoped the Powers will intervene. The envoys* regard the hombardmeut of T/'imatavo, as a wanton and cruel act, and fear many foreign residents are killed.
