HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. In the House on Tuesday, Mr Seddou moved the second reading of the Gold Duty Abplition Bill. The whole afternoon and evening sittings were taken up with the discussion on it, resulting in the second reading being carried by a majority of four, although it waa « opposed by Government. Mr Bryce said he was going to proceed civilly against Rusden, who had written a book libelling him, and 'asked that a motion on the Order Paper having for its object the defraying of the expenses out of the public funds be withdrawn, as it was not right that public funds should be so used. Mr DeLatour said as the Government had objected to the Native Lands Settlement Company Bill on public grounds. ho would abandon all the public clauses of it, and adhere only to such clauses as personally interested the company. If they objected to postpone the Bill for a week he would abandon it altogether. Major Atkinson agreed to the poneraent for a week, and so it was carried. Replying to Mr Fish, the Hon, Mr Johnston said the Government had referred the claims of sufferers by the fire at the Dunedin railway station goods shed to the Law Officers of the Crown, who were now considering it. been informed that Government would accept the notices of their claim already given as sufficient. Mr Rolleston moved the ’ ' second reading of the Land Act Amendment Bill, which has for its object the extension of the leasing of lands instead , cf Belling them. The Bill was reported. Every Member of the House spoke on the subject: Government supporters and Oppositionists alike, and it passed the second reading. The Bankruptcy Bill was considered in Committee, and ordered to be recommitted next Friday. The House then adjourned.
