CREATION OF AURORA BOREALIS

The Inst scientific wonder is one of the most amazing yet recorded. The aurora borealis has ever been regarded as one of Nature’s mysteries. Its connection with electric conditions and magnetic storms has long been known, but the exact method of its production was a secret. It has now been given up. Professor Forester, the Berlin astronomer, gave an account on Wednesday of the marvellous results of experiments made in North Finland by Professor Lendstroem, of Helsingfors. At about67deg North he placed anetwork of copper wire, terminating in many perpendicular points, on the top of two mountains, one of which is 6000 feet high. This network of wire he connected to the earth at the bottom of each hill in the usual manner. The astonishing result, as foreseen, was the formatien of an aurora borealis, rising above the mountain top to an elevation estimated at 360 feet.
