STRANGLES.
As a large number of horses are lost every year through improper treatment of this disease, a few lines on the nature and treatment may be of service to settlers s tuated out of reach of a veterinary surgeon. It attacks young horses ch iefly, and is characterised by sore throat and cough, a thick yellow discharge from the nostrils, and the eruption of a hard inflammatory tumour between the branches of the lower paw, which matures, and in about ten days from the first appearance of the disease bursts. Treatment : Keep the animal coo), but not cold ; encourage him to eat bruised oats, boiled barley, carrots, or whatever he prefers for nutritive food, by maintaining the health and strength favors the formation of the abscess. Avoid bleeding physic, etc , for they only interfere with the natural cause of the malady, which must run its course. Steam and foment the head, and unless symptoms ,oi suffocation appear the abscess may be safely allowed to burst of itself, If the tumour does not come forward properly leistering may be had recourse to, and tunic medicine given —Exchange -
