ENGLISH MARKETS,

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company on Monday received the following message by cable from London : —“ Wheat —Continental crops generally all good. New Zealand is worth 45s per 4961b5; market falling; c.i.f. weaker.

From the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company’s circular of the 17th May, 1883, we make the following extracts;—

Wool.—The second series of Colonial Wool sales for the present year commenced yesterday. The opening catalogue was made up as follows : —New South Wales and Queensland, 1592 bales ; Victoria, 1221 ; South Australia, 1117 I Western Australia, 8 ; Tasmania, 127 ; New Zealand, 1053 ; Cape of Good Hope, 1438 ; Sundries, 73 ; Total, 6628. There was a full attendance of buyers, all sections of the trade being represented, and competition was generally active. The catalogue though small, was fairly representative, and buyers took without hesitation the various lots submitted to their notice. An occasional depreciation in the value of coarse cross-breds of about -}/i per ib was observable, and faulty scoured merinos were also somewhat easier ; but with these exceptions the market was well supported, and rates

were found to be on a par with those current at the close of the last series. Reports from Ihe manufacturing districts are not altogether flattering, but as we 'are now experiencing fine growing weather, and our harvest prospects are encouraging, we hope presently to see a more cheerful feeling in the trade. It is something in favor of the possibilities of more extensive commitments on the part of buyers, that stocks in all hands are believed to be so light as to admit of free purchases if the outlook for the coming summer should be such as to warrant them.

Corn market.—During the past fortnight the weather has been very irregular wet and cold nights alternating with fine, dry and sunny days. The English harvest will in all probability be late, but up to the present farmers do not seem to be dissatisfied with the prospects of a crop. Matters are now, however, fast approacha critical point, and during the next few weeks the state of the weather throughout the country will be the subject of great anxiety to all concerned with agricultural interests. To-day’s quotations ex granary are as follows . Wheat, Australian, 48s 6d to 49s 6d j New Zealand ‘ longberried,’ 37s 6d to 48s: New 7.^a * __ ‘ average,’ 42s to 45s ; New Zealand ‘inferior,’ 40s to 41s ; per 496 lbs. Flour, Australian ‘ superfine,’ 33s to 34s ; Australian, ‘ fine,’ 27a to 28s ; New Zealand, 28a to 29s ; per 280 lbs gross. Barley, New Zealand, 34s to 39s ; per 448 lbs. New Zealand oats, 1 fine,’ 30s to to 34s ; ‘ ordinary,’ 25s to 275; par Imperial quarter. Beans, 43s to 44s ; per 504 lbs.

Tallow.—Australian Mutton, ‘ fine,’ 45s to 46s ; ‘ medium,’ 44s to 44s 6d ; .Beef, ‘ fine,’ 42s 6d to 43s ; ‘ medium,’ 41s to 425; per cwt. New Zealand Hemp.—The market is very dull, and only small sales have been effected, at easy rates for half dressed but at full pi ices for clean. We quote : Good to fine clean £25 to £3O per ton, and ordinary fair to half-dressed £2l to £24 per ton.

Mother Swan’s Worm Syrup—lnfallible, tasteless, harmless, carthartic ; for feverishness, restlessness, v'orms, constipation. Is, at Druggists. Moses, Moss and Co, Sydney, General Agents. Holloway's Ointment and Pills.— Though it is impossible, in this climate of changing temperature, to prevent illhealth altogether, yet its form and frequency may be much mitigated by the early adoption of remedial measures. When hoarseness, cough, thick breathing, and the attending slight fever indicate irritation of the throat or chest, Holloway’s Ointment should be rubbed upon these parts without delay, and his Pills taken in appropriate doses, to promote its curative action. No catarrhs or sore throats can resist these remedies. Printed directions envelope every package of Holloway’s medicaments, which are suited to all ages and conditions, and to every ordinary disease to which humanity is liable.
