GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the above body was held yesterday. The question of paying half the cost of the Rangitata Bridge was discussed, and Mr Moody proposed to defer the claim until it had been proved that the present structure was suitable to stand heavy floods. A discussion took place, in the course of wnich Mr Sherratt asked whether there was any loophole by which the Council could escape payment, in the case of the bridge being washed away. Several members held that there was but Mr Sherratt of a different opinion. An amendment was proposed by Mr Talbot, and seconded by Mr Tripp, to the effect that Messrs Meason and Marchant be appointed to report on the Bridge, but only the mover and seconder supported it, and the original motion was agreed to. Mr Clulee moved, and Mr Paterson seconded, 1 That the clerk’s salary be £3OO a year, £3O as travelling expenses.’ Mr Moody opposed the motion, and moved that the arrangements with the clerk remain as they are. The matter dropped without coming to any understanding on the subject, The sum of £IOO was agreed to be distributed amongst the Road Boards, giving to each district in proportion to the amount paid by them for eggs. It was agreed to place £ISOO on a fixed deposit. Mr Postlethwaite wrote stating that the Geraldine Wafer Works Bill had passed the first reading, and was designated a Private Bill. Certain measures would shortly be introduced by Government which would contain clauses that would supply the place of the Bill, and he thought it would not then be necessary. The Chairman suggested that the thanks of the Council should be tendered to Mr Postlethwaite for hs atttn'ion to the Bill, Mr Moody said it was time enough to thank Mr Postleth waite when he bad done something. It was rediciilous to allow the Bill to be called a private one. The matter dropped. Mr Sherratt proposed to take over the Orari Bridge, but the matter was deferred till next meeting,
