THE RANGITATA ROAD.

TO IHB EDITOR. Sir.—l have read Mr Slack's letter in your issue of the sth. I was struck with one remark lie made, viz., " Was ever a satisfactory Toad made in a river bed.' It so hapens that this road runs from half a niile to a mile, or more, parallel with the river or shingle-bed, and that the nearest place to the shingle-bed of the river (and this is only in one case) is ' about seven chains,' therefore Mr Slack's remark can't apply to this road. 1 am quite sure Mr Shiers, the Over°eer of the Geraldine Road Board, only requires authority from the Board to make it a first class road. I will ask Mr Slack one question, Has he ever been along this road ? If he has not I recommend him to do so. I think he will then praise you for the article in your issue of June 30th, which struck me as being jiißt and fair between all parties concerned.—l am ; etc., 0. G. Tripp.

Orari Gorge, July 9th, 1883. P.S.—l was struck on Friday last, when I rode along this road for the first time at the black rich soil in the paddocks on both sides oE the road for a considerable distance. The whole of the land is not enclosed, but if it were, and turned up, I feel certain that very little poor shingle land, unfit for cultivating (if any),* could be found. The whole can be ploughed.
