RANGITATA ROAD.

TO THE EDITOR. £ir —-For the information of your readers I must wr.te and throw some light on statements made in your leader of June 30th re Kangitata road, some of which to any one acquainted with the district appear most absurd. The road in question has always been k'nown as the ' Rangitata River Bed Road,' almost the extreme north east boundary of the Geraldine Road Board District. You, Mr Editor, compare this road with other roads]connecting two districts, and gire your' verdict accordingly. For instance Roads connecting the Geraldine and Tcmukt, Districts, the road, from the Cave to the Point, roads running through some ot the richest land m South Canterbury : whereas this Rangitata River Bed Road is the direct road from Peel Forest to the "Rangitata Railway Station over a stony flat. So far as there is any comparison between the above named roads, there is about as much difference as there is betweeo black and white. What will the people of Timaru think of having their streets compared by you to a river bed road ? I don't think they will feel flattered. I ask anyone who has any knowledge of the country, Is th« re any comparison between the Rangitata River Bed Road and the streets of Timaru, «r the roads between the Cave and th<« Point, or between the Geraldine aud Temuka Districts? Then why should any one attempt to mislead ihe public by making absurd statement*, You speak ofdis-

satisfaction. Was ever a satisfactory road made in a river bed ? Some ot jour readers might suppose that the Mount Peel Road Board had been most cruelly treated by the Geraldine Road Board. I conclude that this famous road, which might be called a one-sided road, is the cause of your making a onesided statement, —lam, etc.,

Wm. (Jpton Slack. Woodside, July 2nd.
