Educational;—Mrs and Miss Janiiesom notifiy that their school, Temuka, will reopen on Monday next, aud that they will be prepared to receive pnpils on Saturday.
E.M. Co UM .—At the Temuka Court, yesterday, bafore S. D. Barker, Esq., J.P., Thomas Watson, charged with being drunk and disorderly, was fined lOi or 24 hours' imprisonment. • Enteetainment. —On Saturday next in the "Volunteer Hall, Mr Henry Teece, assisted by Mrs Waters and others, will give an entertainment, consisting of readings, recitations and vocal and instrumental music.
Death tbom Exhaustion.—A man named Joseph Hedley died last Wednesday evening from exhaustion. He was engaged from 5.20 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. in crossing sheep over the Waipawa river near Napier, and in the afternoon fell exhausted into the river.
The Timaeu llbbald.—Tho Timaru Herald of Tuesday last was a curiosity. Wo hare nerer seen so great a iness made of any paper, The mail news was distributed all oyer the paper, with columns of other news thrown in between. Under the heading of political news was a te'egram about the Supreme Court of Christchurch, and so on. What is the Blue Ribbon and Sal rat ion Armies doing ? The Alleged G-oldfield.—lt is reported on good authority (says the Press) that the gold discoTery receutly mentioned as being made within forty-fire miles of Chrostchurch is on the High Peaks Station, about seren miles from the Whiteciffs railway line. One of the gentleman connected with the property has found a cradle near one of the creeks, and which had eridently been used for the purpose of washing dirt. G-old Find. —During the last week considerable excitement has prera : led in Wellington, about the Terawhiti goldfield. owing to the reported striking of a gold bearing reef in the Golden Crown claim. During last week shares in that city rose from 4s to 10«, amity a meeting of shareholders last Tuesday nijjjht, M.r C. Mace announced that a rich
reef 4ft thick, had boon struck, bearing s'one superior to reefs which he had known to crush from 6oz to Boz to the ton. The mine manager confirmed this. Sham har» now
altered to 17s 6d, and shares in other claims are also rapidly rising. Auction Sale.—There was a good attendance at Mr Mundell's stock sale yesterday. Considering the season of the year and the depression, fair prices were realised. The Sheep Inspector.—A petition is being circulated in Garaldine district, and up to the lime is being numerously signed, to the Government praying that Mr James Macdonald may be reinstated as Sheep Inspector for South Canterbury.
Good Templart in Geraedinb. — We learn that steps hare been taken whereby shortly a Good Templars' Hall will be erected in Geraldme. A section of land has been purchased in a capital position, and plans for the hall are now to hand. Tenders' will be advertised for in due course.
School por North Orari.—A meeting of North Orari residents, was held last Monday, Mr W. Gunn in the chair. Messrs Gunn, Taylor, Ford, Annals, Newport, Ellery, and Griffith were elected a Committee for the proposed school. At a meeting of the Committee held afterwards Mr Gunn was unanimously elected Chairman. The question of a school site was next discussed, when it was unanimously resolved to recommend the Board to apply to Government to grant 30 aore3 of lot 39, Eeserve 1381, in the northwest angle, formed by the road and railway line, for that purpose ; the site in question being q very central one, and readily accessible. Some dissatisfaction was expressed about retaining the name of the cancelled district of North Orari, as it was wide and vague, and might lead to misapprehension. Strugglew' Flat, by which a portion of the new district is known, could not be entertained, and on the Chairman's suggestion it was resolved to ask the Board to confer on the district the name of one of their former Chairmen, now absent in England, viz:, Mr Belfield, and that any correspondence to the Committee should in future be addressed, " Belfield, Orari." The proceedings closed with a vote of thanks to Mr Taylor for the use of his room.
Mb G-keen's BlLi/.—The following ii the text of the operative clause in Mr. M. W Green's Bill to empower shopkeepers and others to regulate the hours of business : "Whenever not less than two thirds of the various persons occupying the position of shopkeepers or merchants, and carrying on any trade or business of the same or similar nature, either by way of manuafacture and sale, or by sale only, and whether by wholesale or retail, in any city, town, municipality, or borough, within the colony, shall sign a '.Memorial in the form of the first schedule appended to this Act, agreeing to close their places of business at a stated hour of the evening on the six days of the week, such agreement shall be published twice in not less than one newspaper circulating in the locality, and shall then have the force of law, and be binding upon the persons signing such memorial, and also upon the personam the eaid city, town, municipality, or borough carrying on the same or a similar trade or business ; and sueh agreement shall have the binding force of law until not less than two-thirds of the same persons carrying on the same or similar trade or business shall sign a memorial m the form of the second schedule appended to this Act, stating that they will no longer be bound to such agreement, and such memorial shall be advertised as provided in the caie of the agreement aforesaid."
In another column will be found the prospectus of the Geraldine Dairy and Bacon Curing Company. Messrs R. Wilkin and Co , will hold a sale of horses, cattle and implements, at their yards Tinuru next Saturday. Mr John Faterson notifies that all trespassers on his property at Springfield and Winchester will be prosecuted.
Messrs. Maclean and Stewart will hold a sale of horses, implements, etc., at their Horse Bazaar, Timaru, next Saturday. Messrs J. Mundell and Co, auctioneers, Geraldine, will hold a sale of freehold property in Geraldine on Tuesday next. Mr K. P. Gray, auctioneer, Temuka, advertises full particulars »f the sale on the farm of Wm. Elder, Levels Plains. The date is fixed for Thursday, 12th July. The Trustees in the estate of Alex Mcintosh, adebtor, no'ify that a dividend of 4s in the £ is now payable on all proved claims in the estate, at the office of Mr K. F, Gray, Temuka.
