CIVIL OASES. J. Ashwell v. Wesley (a Maori)— Claim £4 Bs. Mr Aspinall appeared for plaintiff. The plaintiff deposed that ho purchased the debts in Leach’s estate and defendant’s name was in the books for the amount claimed. Defendant stated that he owed the amount, but be had a contra account against the plaintiff; Mr Aspinall objected to any contra account, being considered by th« Bench as no set-off had been filed. The Bench considered the objection fatal and gave a verdict for plaintiff for amount claimed and costs. Same v. Albert (a Maori) —Claim £6 11s lid. Mr Aspinall appeared for plaintiff. The defence was similar as in tho

previous case, - Judgment recorded for plaintiff with co«ts and solicitor’s fee. Same v. Fowler (a Maori) —Claim 17s 3d. Mr Aspinall for tho plaintiff. In this case also, defendant said ha had a conti a account, but bad not filed it as a set-off. Judgment for plaintiff with costs. Same v. G. Lynch—Claim £2 7s 6d, Mr Aspinall appeared for plaintiff. Judgment for plaintiff by default. H. Brosnaban v. Tahaen—Claim £2 9s Bd.

Judgment by default. B Thomson v; J. Roddick—Claim £6 19s. Judgment summons. E. Forward v. J. Roddick—Claim £3 16s. Judgment summons. On the application of plaintiffs, both cases were adjourned for a fortnight for the evidence of a witness to prove defendant’s ability to pay.
