TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

-The usual monthly meeting of the Temuka School Committee, which lapsed for a want of a quorum on 19th June was held on Saturday, 23rd June. 1883. Present - Messrs Mackay (Chairman), Blyth, Gray, Kirk, and. Pearpoint. . The minutes of last monthly meeting and special meeting held on 18th May were read and confirmed. Correspondence read as follows : Outward.—To Education Board, five letters and one telegram ; Head Master, three letters; Rev. Hamilton and W. J. Steward Esq, one letter each. Proposed by Mr Gray, seconded by Mr Pearpoint and carried—' That with • reference to the £2O granted in 1880 for tree planting, the Secretary write to the ' Board stating that the Committee still hold that amount for the pnrpose granted viz., tree planting, and beg to refer the Board to paragraph four of letter from the Chairman Temuka School Committee, dated 20th December, 1882, and that the Committee now suggest that the Board take; steps to have the school grounds fenced in, and that the Committee will then be prepared to expend the sum tbey now hold in the manner for which that amount was granted.' Mr Gray was appointed to see Mrs Rowe re her resuming her duties, and to inform the Secretary of the result of the interview to enable him to write to the Board on the subject. Proposed by Mr Pearpoint, seconded "by Mr Blyth and carried 'That the Secretary write to the Board stating that the present house accommodation for the Head Master is inadequate, the rooms being both too few and small, that there is now available a suitable residence which could be procured for£l per week, and asking the Board if they would be willing to allow the Committee that amount.' Proposed by Mr Pearpoint, seconded by Mr Kirk and carried—' That the Secretary write to the Head Master stating that the Committee haying ascertained thut they have violated the Education Act by allowing religious instruction during school hours, they beg to thank him and the other teachers for their kindneni in imparting such instructions and that in future they would be goo<r enough to discontinue such instruction for the above reason. < Proposed by Mr, Pearpoint, seconded by Mr Kirk and carried—• That, the secretary write .to the Rev. Hamilton enclosing copy of proceeding resolution, and stating that the Committee have no objection to allow the use of the school to the ministers of the various denominations for religious instruction at any time out of 1 school hours. ' . j The Chairman's action in closing the school for week 23rd to 30th June, in consequence of the absence of all the pupil teachers at examination, was approved of. With reference to a boy who had not been attending school, it was rrfsolved to request the.parents to obtain a certificate from the person, imparting private tuition to him. , Besolved—'That the Head Master be requested to forward a list of all chronic absentees so that the necessary steps could be taken to enforce attendance. Mr Mackay having tendered his resig- i nation as Chairman and member of the Committee. Mr Gray was voted . to the Chair. ' • • ■ ■ j u Proposed by Mr Kirk, seconded by Mr Blyth and carried—' Th«c the Secretary write to Mr Mackay, expressing the Committee's sincere regret that he was leaving the district, and that thfty now desire to place on record the high appreciation they have of bis valuable services both ns "Chairman nnd member of the Committee.' Mr Mackay's resignation being duly accepted it was proposed by Mr Pearpoint, seconded Mr Kirk and canied—4 That Mr O'Halloran be elected to fill the vacancy as member of Committee. Proposed by Mr BoUon. seconded by Mr Pearpoint and carried—'That Mr Gray be appointed Chairman.' Mppots KirV and Pearpoint were apr dated to vM; the school during the cumnt month. J. Batterbee's aceount for the month'as janitor £2 13s 3d was passed for payment. The meeting then closed. _

Lovely Climes.—There are lovely climes and places in which' the evening zephyrs are loaded with malaria and the poison of fever and epidemics. To dwell there in health is impossible without a supply "of Hop Bitters on hand.
