Kate.—The Temuka Eoad Board no'ifies the striking of a rate of three eights of a penny in the pound for the period ending March 31, 1884. The ra'e will be payable on and after the 12th July next. Accident at Waimate—A man named Hunt who was trying to stop a bolting horse on Thursday evening was knocked down, and the injuries he received led to his death yesterday.
Held Over.—We are are reluctantly com pelled to hold over our leading article, letters to ihe Editor, comm3rcial reports, report of the A. and P. Association and several other matters of interest, owing to unusual pressure on our space. The same reason compelled us to condense as much as possible the Governor's speech and ether reports. Colonial Industry.—The turning out of the 100th engine from the Phoenix Foundry, Ballarat, was made the occassion of a demonstration, at which six members of the Ministry were present.. Of the 100 engines manufactured 96 have been supplied to the Government at a Co3t of about £300,000, and the company are engaged on a contract to supply 50 more.
Tiie Blue Ribbon 4rmy.—The above association will commence a three days mission on Monday evening next in the Volunteer Hall Mr J. T. Smith, of Chrstchurch, will open the mission, and the Rev 11. C. M. Wa son of St. John's Chrisfchurch will be the speaker for Tuesday evening.. The clergy of Temuk* will also lake part in the proceedings. An ad vortisemeht appears elsewhere
Train Accident —As the train on Thurs day evening was nearing Kiverton, a man Jeremiah Kegan was caught by the cow catcher, and dragged 200 yards betoro the driver noticed him. When taken to the hopital it was found that his skull was fractured, his left arm broken in two places, and he was suffering from concussion of the brain.
Fire in Timaku.—-A. three-roomed house in Timaru, insured in the Globe Ofijce for £2OO, was noticed on fire about 4 o'clock yesferdaj The police found the fire had broken out simultaneously ; n three places : tar had been plentifully strewn over the floor, and the walls were saturated with kerosono. The doors were looked, and Mi* Parsons, the owner of it, had the keys. The fire was put out before much damage wm done.
Weslbtan Church, Tempka.—Tho Rev. Mr Beck, of Timaru, will conduct the morning and evening services in the above churc n to-morrow.
BUTTER AND CHEE3E FACTORY. —A I meeting of the Direotors of Ihe Temuka Butter. Cheese and Bac n Curing Fac'ory Company. Limited. was held in the Wallingford Hoi el on Tuesday. Present:—Messrs Guild (Chairman), Gray, Hayhurst, Grant. R ABarker, Paterson and Austin. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following accounts ware passed for payment:—Contractors' progress payment, £200; Incidentals, £7 2s; total £207 23. The Architect (Mr Upton) was in attendance, and reported that tho Factory building would be completod in the early part of July next, and that he had made a visit to Edendale for the purpose of examining the interior ar-tngements. He submitted a price list of the fittings, utensils, etc from which the Directors chose the most necessary and decided to purchase them at en early date The Secretary reported that the share holders' payments had been more promptly made during the last few weeks, but that there wasslill a considerable number who had only paid the application fee. He was accordingly in-tructed to issue summonses against, tho defaulters. After some fnrthe r discussion of a general natnre tho meeting terminated. Mr C G. Tripp publishes an address to the Geraldine electors. Messrs Siegert and Fauvcl are purchasers of dairy-fed pigs. Mr K. F Gray will hold a sale of jewellery, etc., at his rooms, Temuka, to-day. The Bailiff of the Temuka Court notifies the sale of a quantity of sundries at the farm of Mr Jas. Smith at Milford to-day Messrs J. Mundell and Co, Geraldine, will hold a »ale to-ctav of a hawker's stock in trade Messrs Maclean and Stewart will hold a sale of horses, etc., at their horse bazaar, Timaru, to-day. On Monday, at Washdyke yards they will soil cattle.
Messrs JR. Wilkin and Co. will sell cattle at "•Vashdyke yards next Monday: They invite tenders for govs© cutting, which close to clay,
