SERIOUS FIRE IS DUNEDIN.

A fire broke out in the new railway goucU shed at about half-past eight o'clock last Tuesday evening It was fu'l of goods, a considerable portion of the cargo of the Westmeath and the whole of the goods per Taniwera winch came in this morning h tving besn stored in it. There was no water available for a long time, as the shed was on reclaimed land. Thousands of people were on the soena of the fire. The burnt shed was about 450 ft in length, and it had cost nearly £3OOO. Two night-watehmen were on duty, one of whom was specially told off to watch thib and another import shed. He had gone round at a quarter-past eight, trying all the doors, and nothing appeared to be wrong Within less than half au hour the firebell rang. Eleven railway trucks loaded were in the shed. Nothing at all was saved, a large number of leading importers "are losers. A 16 horse power gas-engine, intended to drive the printing and elecric light machinery in the Daily Times office was burnt, It is known that 14 truck loads of goods from the Terawera were placed in the shed that evening. One importer of jeweilery had goods to the value of £SOOO in it. The shed has been in the hands of the Railway Department for a month. Nothing is known yet as to the origin of the fire. It is believed that the loss to the Insurance Cotnpmies will be extremely small, but that it will »ll fal on the owners.
