GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Geraldine County Council was held in Timaru last Thursday. Present—Mr C. G. Tripp (Chairman), and Messrs J. Talbot, G. F. C'nlee, A. Sherratt, W. Moody, J. Paterson, and J. C. McKerrow.

The following motion standing in Mr Tripp’s name, was by leave of the Council withdrawn— 1 That at the next meeting a rate be struck to meet the wants of the County.’

The following motion, of which Mr

Moody had given notice at last was then taken, and after some discussion lost:—‘That, instead of adding to the present over burdened and over governed system of local guvcrumoul, it bo cum

sidered more advisable for the Council to abdicate in favor of Road Boards.’ It was then proposed by Mr Moody and seconded by Mr Clulee— ‘ That instead of adding to the present over burdened and over governed system of local government it be considered more advisable to ask the ratepaying public to put the necessary steps in motion by petition to ask for the suspension of the Counties Act in this County.’ This was, on being put to the meeting, also lost. The following resolutions were carried : Proposed by Mr Tiipp, seconded by Mr Paterson—‘That a Committee consisting cf Messrs McKerrow, Talbot, and Moody, be appointed to analyse the accounts of revenue and expenditure since the commencement of the Council, and report on same ] leaving it to their discretion to publish the accounts.’ Proposed by Mr Moody, and seconded by Mr McKerrow— ‘ That a copy oi the Bill proposed to be introduced into Parliament next session for a supply of water in Geraldine County be sent to the Chairof each Road.Board,’

Proposed by Mr Talbot, seconded by Mr Paterson— ‘ That the control and maintenance of the bridges on the main roads be taken over by the Council ; subject, however, that before taking over any bridge a resolution to do so must be passed by the Council.’ Proposed by Mr Talbot, and seconded by Mr McKerrow—‘That the maintenance of the Opihi bridge bo taken over by the Council. 1

Proposed by Mr Talbot, and seconded by Mr McKerrow —* That an application be made under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act of 1882 for threequarters of the cost of reconstructing the old part of the Opihi Bridge, the Council being prepared to find the other fourth ; and that Mr Meason be appointed to prepare plans and estimates as required by the Act in time to apply by June 30th.’ Proposed by Mr Talbot, and seconded by Mr Moody—' That Messrs Moody and McKerrow be a Committee to arrange with Mr Meason re plans, cost and specifications for the Opihi Bridge.’

The petition sent down by Mr Wyn Williams, of Christchurch, re the Geraldine County Waterworks Bill, praying that it may be considered a public Bill, was then signed by all tbe members of the Council,

Accounts amounting to £4l 2s lOd were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned to the first Wednesday in August.
