MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.
A special meeting of the Board was held in the Road Board office, Peel Forest, on Monday, 4th J une. Members present —The Hon. J. B. A. Acland, Messrs G. J. Dennistoun and C. G. Tripp. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
Tenders for No 8 contract were opened, and that of Radford and Co at £4O was accepted.
The following correspondence was read and considered :
From Mr R. Mackay, apologising for non-attendance at the meeting, owing to his having to bo in Christchurch on that day.
From tli# Chief Surveyor, Christchurch, stating that the certificate of title for sections 27300 and 32817 had been issued.
The Overseer was instructed to have the proposed new road surveyed through the above-mentioned sections for the purpose of having the road declared under the Public Works Act.
From Mr W. R. Reay, calling attention to the damage done to hia land by storm water from the Opuha Gorge road.
The Overseer was directed to inspect the road at the first opportunity, also to forward a plan of the road to the Chief Surveyor, and enquire if the road through section 28370 is surveyed as shown on the plan. From the Colonial Secretary in reference to the delay in the election of members of the Road Board, stating that the present members hold office till the new Board is elected, and that an Order in ‘Council will be made extending the election during the month of June. From the Property Tax office, intimating that the necessary corrections had been made in the Valuation Roll, and thtt the roll had been forwarded. From Mr L. W. Marchant, reporting that the first pile of the Opuha bridge bad been driven very satisfactorily. The Overseer’s report was read and the following resolutions passed thereon. — 1 1. That a man be sent over the Clayton bridle track to put it in repair. 2; That the Surveyor obtain the consent of Mrs Moorhouse to enter upon her section in Peel Forest for the purpose of sloping off the side of the cutting. 3. That the matter of building a bridge ovei the creek in Cattle Valley be deferred for the present. 4. That the Overseer purchase another horse and dray for the use of the Board.’
The question of passing a special Order for increasing the number of members of the Board to six was discussed, when it was resolved— That in consideration of the smallness of the meeting, and the want of time the motion be withdrawn, and the matter be left for the consideration of the new Board.
Resolved—‘That the clerk prepare plans of the road from the boundary and opposite the Rangitata bridge leading up the Rangitata river to Mesopotamia, and the direct road from Fairlie Creek to Geraldine, with the object of having ihem declared county roads.’
Resolved—' That the Annual meeting of Ratepayers he held on Thursday the 14th June, and that the election of the new Board be held on the 21st June.’ After passing accounts to (he amount of £5lO 9s 10J the Board adjourned till the 14th J uuo. ,
GERALDINE RACING CLUB. The annual meeting of the Geraldine Racing Club was held in the Geraldine Hotel last Monday evening. Mr Pearpoint occupied the chair, and there was a large number of people present.
Mr McKenzie, Secretary to the Club, read the balance-sheet, which shewed that the receipts from all sources for 1882 were £IOO7 7s sd, including overdraft £lO9 9s. The expenditure strictly on racing and expenses connected therewith were £537 14s 9d, £467 19s on the buildings forming the course, and £77 19s Id expended in 1881, making a total of £545 18s Id expended altogether on the new course. The statement showed an overdraft of £lO9 9s, but to meet this sura the Club have debts outstanding to the amount of £202 17s.
On the motion of Mr Cunningham seconded by Mr Lawson, the balancesheet was adopted. On the motion of Mr D, Andrews, seconded by Mr T. Farrell, it was resolved—* That it be a recommendation to the Committee, that the regulations for the County Plate be so altered, as to require that all horses be trained in the district. ’ An honorarium of £25 was voted to the Secretary.
A plan showing improvements in the racecourse which will render the run home a splendid one was generally approved,and the Secretary explained that the contract had been let.
Messrs D McKenzie, J Kennedy, and W Deßenzy were re-elected members of Committee, and Mr J. Cunningham in place of Mr Corbett who had retired.
Messrs James McDonald, John Rae, Adam Eae, J W Leokner, A rtlwr Barker, and S Breadley, were elected members of the Club,
A vote of thanks was unanimously accorded to Mr D McKenzie for the valuable aid rendered to the club during the past year. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Postlethwaite for his kindness in giving the use of a paddock for training ground.
A meeting of the Committee was held immediately after the annual meeting. Mr R. H. Pearpoint was unanimously re-elected Chairman.
The following were elected Stewards : Messrs TW. Corbett, D. McKenzie, R. H. Pearpoint, W, Polhill, J. Kennedy, W. DeEenzy, J. Meikle, J. Mundell, W, Lawson, J M Ollivier, J Cunningham, D Denoon, and A L Barker, Mr J R StanseU was elected Clerk of Course, Mr T W Corbett Clerk of Scales, Mr M Stud holme Judge, Mr J Meikle Starter, Mr D McKenzie, Handicapper. A programme was then drawn up. The amount of money to be given away in prizes on the first day is £355, and on the second day ££4ls,
A letter was read from the C.J.C. re disqualification of the horse Dalesman and his rider, F Peff. Resolved —“That the decision Jof the C.J.C. be endorsed.’ A letter was read from Mr P. Mason re lotalisator. Resolved—‘ That he be advised that the Club intend to call for tenders.’ The meeting then terminated.
