THE INANGAHUA ELECTION.
Grevmouth, May 17. Mr Wakefield was entertained at a banquet last night. About 170 persons were present and it was a very successful gathering. Mr W. S. James, solicitor, presided, and the vice-chair was occupied by Mr P. J. Caples, exCounty Chairman. In proposing lire toast of the evening the Chairman said though defeated, Mr Mr Wakefield had secured a larger number ot voles than any othci unsucccsslul or successful candidate in tho colony except Mr Shaw, and considering the extraordinary Government and County Council influence brought to bear against him, his position at the poll was in the highest degree honorable to the candidate and to the electors who supported him, and should another opportunity arise Mr Wakefield would be again invited to contest, and profiting by the experience cd the last .contest such steps would be taken as would secure his return by a triumphant majority. Mr Wakefield in replying said the result, consideiing the character of the oppositionists and the fact that he was comparatively a stranger to the electors was the highest compliment ever paid to a public it an in the colony. S.iould the opportunity again occur, and the people desired it, lie should f?el ready again to come forward. His visit to the West Coast was an epoch in his lifetime, and the reception he met with and the support accorded him would never be forgotten,
