GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The usual iponthly meeting was held on Monday, the 7th day of May, 1883, in the Road Board Office, Geraldine. members present. Messrs Wm. Postlethwaite (Chairman), Win. Upton Slack, Wm. Deßenzy, and Frederick R. Fiatman. MINUTESThe minutes of last meeting were re ad and confirmed. TENDERS. The following tenders were opened and considered : No. 56, Beautiful Valley road— Thomas Corkery, £4O ; Alexander McOool, £35 (accepted). No 57, Hardcastle’s cutting—Alexander McOool, £35; Martin B'ophy, £33 15s ; Thomas Corkery, £33 (accepted). CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and considered :
From tiie Mount Peel Road Board, dated 20th February, disclaiming any responsibility for any portion of cost of works on the Eangitata river-bed road. Resolved— 1 That the matter stand over for the present, ’ From Mr Robert Hammond and others, dated April 26th, asking the Board to shingle the road from Rhubarb Flat to King’s cutting ; also, for a drain to be cut from King’s cutting to Howes’ potatoes. Resolved— 1 That the Overseer attend to what is required, and report at next meeting re shingling.’ From Mr Arthur Ormsby, dated April 1883, re Hans Mainland’s rate, stating that the estate had been in the hands of the Government. From Mr John Ingram, dated 17 th April, 1883, offering a quantity of black birch limber at South Eangitata at a cheap rate. Resolved — 1 That the matter be left in the hands of the Overseer.'
From the Agent of the Bank of 'New Zealand, dated 30th April, stating that the sum of £324 15s had been paid to the credit of the Board.
Resolved—‘That the allocation to the Temuka Road Boad stand over until next Board day.’
From the proprietor of the Temuka Leader and Geraldine Guardian, dated 7th May, asking fora share of advertisements, and offering to insert advertisements sent to the Geraldine Guardian in the Temuka Leader free of charge.
From J. Sperrey, Commissioner of the Property Tax, dated 21at April, forwarding the valuation roll for the Geraldine Road District.
Eesolred —‘ That the Clerk acknowledge the receipt of the same.’ From Mr C. G. Tripp, dated 24th April, regretting that the Soared had not removed the stones off the road near his gate according to the promise of the act-ing-chairman. Mr Slack, the cost thereof being guaranteed by Mr Tripp ; also asking the Board to remove gorge off the road, near Waihi Bush, to prevent the same seeding on his hind, Eesolved—‘That Mr Tripp be Informed that a man was sent up at the time ip grub up the gorse ; but it has grown up since. With reference to stones on the road, the Board do not see any reason for altering their decision, but will give Mr Tripp full power to remove all stones off the road.’
From.Mr George Ward and a number of ratepayers, dated 3rd May, asking the Board to construct some protective works in the river-bed at the Cemetery road corner, to prevent the river overflowing.
Resolved— -‘That the Overseer report upon the same.’ From the Traffic Manager N.Z. Railways, dated 9th April, enclosing an account of £35 10s 6d, for putting in a level crossing over the railway, near Orari.
Resolved— ‘That the Chairman write to the Minister of Public Works complaining of the cost.’
From the Property Tax Commissioner, stating that the first elections under the new Road Board Act have to be put off until the first week in June; on account of the Valuation Bolls not being ready.
overseer’s report.
The Overseer’s report was read and considered, and the following resolutions passed thereon (1) Webb’s penalty for Townsend’s road not to be inflicted, on account of bad weather; (2) Brosnahan and Nolan’s to be enforced ; (3) work to be done per Mr A. Sherralt s application ; (4) Wells and Love’s road to stand over for the present; (5) stones to be broken and thistles to be cut on Rangitata riverbed road, but no other work to be done till after the election in Juno ; (6) Townsend’s road to stand over for the present; (7) Overseer to be fully empowered to en-
force the removal of gorse on. dine road ; (8) Penalty to be • inflicted if the specitied time is exceeded on Peckham’s road ; (9) The damage done by the late floods—The Overseer to take such steps as he thinks desirable to open up the Orari bridge as soon as p .'fsihle ; (10) The Waihi river weir to be attended to when all important work is done. The Overseer estimated the damage done by the late flood at abont £IOOO approximately. advertising. Resolved—‘ That the Board advertise in the Geraldine Guardian with the understanding that the advertisement is inserted in the Temuka Leader free of cost. All special important notices to bo inserted in the Tirnarw Herald and Geraldine Guardian.’ accounts. Accounts to the amount of £lB4 19s 6d were passed for payment. ADJOURNMENT. The Board then adjourned until Tuesday, the 22nd May, 1883, at 10 a.m.
