TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The adjourned monthly meeting of the Temuka Koad Board was held in the Board's office last Tuesday. There were present Messrs Talbot (Chairman), R. A. Barker, J. Austin, and A. Ensor. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. DEPUTATIONS. Messrs Wheelband and Levcns attended the Board asking for the formation of a footpath about 12 chains in length to protect their land from the water flowingdown thenwin gouth road. The request was granted on the understanding that the footpath be made owing solely to the formation of the main road causing the overflow. Mr Oldfield attended the Board askin°- that protective works be put up to save his property from the inundations of the river Opihi. The Board considered that it was not within their province to protect private properties, but the Surveyor was re- r quested to inspect and repert thereon. Mr Pratley attended the Board asking that the ditch which passes throughhis property be cleaned as it was also damaging the road. He also requested the Board to supply him with sufficient timber to erect a small bridge over the oreek. The latter request was refused, bat the Surveyor was requested to inspect and report on the former. Mr Ensor stated that the road between his place and Mr Hay's was im- X passable. He had allowed and was willing to allow traffic through, his property if the Board would pay for v the damage in consequence, . The Board agreed fo this.

Mulloy, £l2l ; Hopkinson, £69 (accepted) ; Wilkinson, £125. surveyor's report, ■ The Surveyor's report was read as follows: "To the Chairman Temuka Road Board. » Sir ( —l have the honor to report for the month ending April 30tb, 1883: " The heavy rains at the beginning of the month carried away several of, the fords, but these were made passable as soon as possible. lam of opinion it is not wise to expend any more money than is necessary to make them so, as every flood may alter the fords, and it is almost impossible to make works that would stand against every flood. Several culverts have been broken in, which have been replaced by pipes. " Gorse on Canal road, complained of by Mr Wareing.—l am of opinion it has come out ot the ditch along side, as there is some growing on the adjoining land, but the cost of removing same would not he more than 20s. " Contracts on hand.—Some of these have been completed satisfactorily and are passed, but others are not progressing as well as might be expected, seeing they have been so long in hand. " New work.—During the time I have had to look through the district, the following are the most urgent : The drain requires to be cleaned out along Mrs Johnstone's property at the Orari down to the railway station, as tho water rises up on the sides of the road, and also spreads on Mrs Johnstone's land ; length about 45 chains.
"Drains. —Another drain requires cleaning out from the blacksmith's shop at the Spur Hut to near McCabe's house. There is water lying there which is damaging the road in places ; length about 100 chains. Metal About half-a-mile of the road by Ackrojd's slaughter yards to Milfbrd requires metal, to join two sections of road already metalled. The Stumps road is being cut up badly at one place along Mr Oompton's farm, as the trees do not allow the sun to dry the road, and it being naturally soft, would require a good coat of metal to make it stand, This ought to be done before the winter sets in, as I see there is a good deal of grain to be carted out on that road ; length about 55 chains.
"Tenders—Tenders have been called for stone-breaking on the Main South road from the Temuka bridge to about one mile beyond Winchester, which are in for your consideration this day. ,s I would ask permission to get some pipes that are required, as we are out of some sizes. Also for a stock of stationary for the office, consisting of book, one ledger and small book, specification forms, etc. lam quite out of some of these.
''Rubbish—A considerable quantity of rubbish is being deposited on the road line near the Temuka river bed, and, if instructed, I will take steps to have this abated, " There is a lot of old papers of no use to the Board lying about, and some rejected tenders and cheques passed for years past. I want instruction what to do with them, as the safe is not large and can be better employed than storing these. " Planking, 8 x 4, is required, as we arc quite of short lengths, " Since I wrote the report h?avy floods have visited the district, but the damage is not so great as might have been expected during such a flood. " New works The road on the Kakahu near Mr Ensor's property has been carried away. Tenders have been called for this work to-day, which are in for your consideration. Two piles of the new Opihi bridge have given away, T have written to the Chairman of the Levels Board for a consultation with their Overseer as (o what is best to be done. Other small repairs have been done to make it passable. About two chains of the mpd leading to the railway bridge on the Temuka ?iver have been washed away, which requires to be made passable as soon as the water goes down. Also the approach to the Te muka foot bridge requires to be replaced, which has been carried away ; also the Main Smith road from the Temuka bridge to Qujnn's Hote.l a ec,at of shingle, as most of the shingle has been washed away ; also some other small works, such as filling holes, which_ the day men are doing ag fagt ag possible.
—I have the honor to be, sir, your obedient servant,
"P. Sinclair, "Surveyor."
