A collision, attended- with serious loss of life, took place in the English channel at midnight on Tuesday, between the ship British Commerce, 1417 tons, bound from London to Melbourne, and the ship County Aberdeen, 1865 tons, from Calcutta to London, ilie British Commerce was cut down below the water line, and sank almost immediately, only Captain Jones and the boatswain being saved. Those two managed to clamber on board the Aberdeen. The number of lives lost was twenty-two. The County Aberdeen was severely damaged, and was towed into Portsmouth to undergo repairs. In the Legislative Assembly this evening, the Postmaster - General’s motion for a continuance of the San Francisco mail service came up for consideration, and, after some discussion, was carried on a division by 41 votes to 3.
