TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
[ The monthly meeting of the above Board was held in the Board's office, Temuka, on Tuesday morning last. Present—Messrs Talbot (Chairman), Barker, Austin, Paterson and Elisor. Mr Sinclair, the Board's new Overseer, was also present. MIN&TES. The minutes of the last meeting were rend and confirmed. chairman's statement. The.. Chairman stated that during tli3 past month tenders had been received for altering the ford at the Rangitata. He had heard that it would be more desirable that the Board should acquire a piece of land adjoining the road, it being very questionable whether if the stream was moved it would have the desired effect. He had seen the owner of the land and had arranged to move the line of fence back for a short distance. The land that would be taken would be thrr.ee quarters of an acre. He had then arranged to make the road down into the stream. The Board would remember that a circular had been received on the 20th January from the Government in reference to roads that were required to be made through Government reserves village. Owing to the Board's difference with their late Overseer nothing had been done in the matter, and during the last month a letter had been received again drawing the Board's attention to the matter. He had been up to Bod Town to see what roads required to be formed there, and he had found that there was a great deal of traffic over a bridge called the Sod Town bridge. The first settlers had built promiscuously, and in some instances houses had been built across Maude street. He believed that the surveyors had done their best when surveying the road to avoid putting any hardship on the owners of these houses, and had made tho main street of different widths, but they could not in two or three instances avoid cutting into the houses. He believed that the Government had allowed these settlers to take up sections in other parts, of the village. The line of road now went through a number of sections that were sold but not built upon, and if the owners of the sections built upon these sections in accordance with the conditions under which they were bought there would be no line of road. He thought that the road should be opened irrespective of the Government, and under these circumstances he thought the Board might give the owners of the houses six months notice. There was some talk of the place being formed into a borough, and he thought the Board should lose nothing that might benefit the town. Mr Bolton, under his instructions had replied as to Maude street, and stating that another 87 j chains would shortly require forming. THS COTTAGES. The Board went into committee on the subject of the immigrants'cottages. THE KERBING. The Chairman stated that he had instructed Mr Langridge to call for tenders for some concrete kerbing. It was only a short length. It was understood when it was first tried that if the concrete kerbing was a success, the Board would continue it when required. A lot of the wood kerbing had warped, and in fact was a nuisance. THE SURFACE MEN.
The Chairman stated that the day men had applied to him for additional pay during the harvest. The Board had paid 8s per day last year during harvest/and the men had left harvest work to eome and do work for the Board that had to be done. He did not think the application out of the way.
After a desultory conversation, during which it was stated that wages had slightly risen lately, the Board decided to grant the application of 8s per day for the past month, and to go on at 7s per daj till further decision had been arrived at.
ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £l7B 7s were passed for payment, THE MAIN ROAD, Mr Barker thought that tenders had been called for breaking stones on (he main voad to the railway crossing above Winchester. Mr Counihan called upon the Board in reference to a tender he had made at the last Board day. He had made a mistake, omitting the cost of the formation. He hoped the Board would favorably consider the matter. As the work was urgent, and there had evidently been a mistake made, the Board decided to allow the tender to be amended,
