In the House of Commons to-day Sir William Vernon Harcourt, Home Secretary, stated in. reply to a question that enquiries had been made by the police regarding the attack upon Lady Florence Dixie by two men disguised ns women, but that the investigation had failed to confirm Lady Dixie's narrative.

A Fenian who arrived at Liverpool from Cork, was detected in the act of landing a box of explosives, and was arrested by the police.

Two persons have been arrested at Cork in connection with the landing of the case of explosives at Liverpool by a Fenian agent, The enthronisation of Dr Benson ns Primate of All England took place at the Canterbury Cathedral to-day. The ceremony was performed by the Archbishop, assisted by other prelates of the Established Church, and in the presence of an immense concourse of clergy and persons of note. The Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase was run yesterday, and resulted as follows :—Zoedone, 1 ; Black Prince, 2 ; Mohican, 3.

The Fenians have threatened to blow up the General Post-office London, with dynamite, unless the prisoners now in custody on charges in connection with the Phoenix Park murders are immediately released. March 31. The Speaker of the House ot Commons has vetoed a motion providing for the protection of the Houses of Parliament by a detachment of troops. Two men named Dasey (? Casey) and Blanagan, who were recently arrested at Liverpool, have been arraigned at the local Police Court on a charge of illegally landing explosives. They were remanded. It is announced that Lord Justice Brett will succeed the late Geo. Jessel as Master of the Rolls.

It is currently reported in continental political circles that Austria, Germany and Italy have agreed to endeavor to avoid a conflict with Franc*, but at the same time to join in repelling any attack that may be made by that Power (sic.) It has been agreed between the English and Spanish Governments that Rodriguez and Costello, two of the Cuba i refugees who were surrendered to the Spanish Government by the police authorities at Gibraltar, shall now ba released, but that Macco, leader of the Cuban rebellion, shall be detained in Gustody as a prisoner of war.

The Basutos have solicited to be placed under the direct rule of the Imperial Government, but they are willing to submit to the rule of the Cape Government if the other cannot be obtained.

The House of Commons has passed a resolution in favor of Bixpenny telegrams.

The schooners now employed in Island cruising in connection with Her Majesty's uhips, on the Australian station are to be sold out of the service and it is reported that H.M.S.'s Goshawk and Swinger will be commissioned to replace them. Both are gunboats of 430 tons, carrying four guns each. The Italian press deny that the P. and 0. Company have abandoned Brindisi as a port of call. The Company explain that their plans for the resumption of the Marseilles route are as yet incomplete. Considerable excitement prevails throughout Albania, owing to fear being entertained of Austrian occupation.

The American Government refuses at present to interfere with the action of the Irish dynamite party in the States. Lord Salisbury has declared that if the colonies and foreign states increase protective duties, England will Lave to rediscuss the whole question of free trade.

It has transpired that the police have succeeded today in surprising a Nihilist rendezvous where laige numbers of the members of the secret society assembled, A severe struggle took place, but ultimately eight persons were arrested ; one of them, however, committed suicide whilst in the hands of toe police. A quantity of dynamite was also seized on the premises. Washington, March 31.

Intelligence has been received here that the Apache Indians have taken up arms and raided the white settlements in Mexico and Ariz >na territories and have massacred 50 Europeans. The Apaihes. threaten to Annihilate the settlers, and the Government has despatched a strong body of troops to the latter's assistance.
