TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.

The first meeting of the newly-elected Harbor Board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs J- H. Sutter, E. Elworthy, W. Moody, J, S. Gibson, A. Hayes, E. Acton, M. Jonas, J. Talbot, K. F. Gray, and J. Wilson. Mr J, Kelland, juu., sent an apology for non-attendance. Mr Moody was unanimously elected Chairman.

The Chairman, in answer to a question, stated that members could only speak once on one subject

It was decided not to insure the wharves.

Messrs Elworthy, Acton, Sutter, Gibson, Gray and the Chairman were elected a Finance Committee, two to form a

quorum.

It was resolved —‘That the arranging of preliminaries and information required for the agents in London upon the floating of the loan be left to the Finance Committee, and a special meeting of the Board be called to consider these matters before completing the power of attorney. 1

It was decided to enforce a small towing charge. It was agreed to hold the meeting of the Board on the second Thursday in each month,

The Engineer’s report was read. It stated that the Breakwater was commenced from low water mark in November, 1878, and that 1232 ft were now completed. 33ft would complete the

contract. It will then total 1-00.1 uc solid concrete work, and, with t;.c approach of 150 ft to high water mark, the structure now measures 1415 ft. Along a part of the Breakwater, on the north side, a wharf had been built, 840 ft in length. The shingle on the south side of the Breakwater had receded since the report of the Commission, two years ago, some 24ft, which was very satisfactory. it was resolved— ‘ That the Engineer be requested to avail himself of the first fine weather and make a complete survey of the southern face of the Breakwater, in order that any injury may be reported to the Board.’

Mr Acton gave notice, of his indention to move—‘That the resolution referring to affixing the seal of the Board, passed on February 8, 1877, be rescinded for the express purpose of allowing its use in floating the loan in London.’
