TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A special meeting of the Temuka School Committee was held in the schoolhouse on Thursday, Ist February, 1883, to consider applications for the post of third teacher and other matters. Present Messrs Macksy (Chairman), Blyth, Brown and Kirk. Co"respondence was read as follows : Outward : —To the South Canterbury Board of Education, six letters and one telegram; Head Master, Rev. G. Barclay, and Mr E, Wakefield, one each. Inward—From the Board of Educa 1 ion, three letters, a memorandum re nominating a person to fill the vacancy on the Board caused by the resigna tion of Mr Belfield, and a telegram re temporary assistance.
From the He ad Master (three letters) re* commending Miss Gertrude Rowe out of three applicants for the post of pupil teacher rendered vacant by the resignation of Miss Guy; calling attention to the fact that Miss F. Brown was only paid at the rate of £1 13s 4d per month, and asking if she could not be paid at the rate of £2 10s, having passed the examination qualifying her to this amount; asking if the c’ass-lists had been received, as it put him to great inconvenience in not being able to classify the pupils; and stating that the school clocks were not going, and required putting right.
From Mr Edward Wakefield and Rev. G, Barclay agreeing to be nominated members of the Education Board.
Two applications were received from the Board for the oflice of third teacher. The Chairman stated that the members would observe from the correspondence that he had written several letters to the Beard pointing out the necessity of procuring temporary assistance, and requesting them to send the clavs-lists. It was only when Miss B, Brown was taken ill that he succeeded in obtaining from the Board the services of Mr McKenzie. In the meantime he had—seeing the staff overworked—-instructed the Head Master to employ the one to he recommended as Miss Guy’s successor. The Head Master recommended Miss Rowe, and the recommendation wanted their confirmation or otherwise.
Proposed by Mr Kirk, seconded by Mr Brown, and carried—'That the Chairman’s action he confirmed, and that Miss Gertrude Rowe he recommended to the Board for the pupil teachership.’ Proposed by Mr Kirk, seconded by Mr Brown, and carried—‘That the Chairman again write to the Board for the class list, and point out the injustice the school is under in these not being to hand earlier,’
The Chairman was instructed to have the clocks repaired, and to bring the matter of Miss Florence Brown’s salary under the notice of the Board with the view of having it rectified.
Proposed by Mr Kirk, seconded by Mr Blyth, and carried—‘ That Mr Talbot be nominated a member of the Board in room of Mr Belfield, resigned, and that the Chairman give effect to this resolution.’ Proposed by Mr Brown, seconded by Mr Kirk, and carried—’ That cheques be signed by the Chairman, and any one member of the Committee.’
Proposed by Mr Kirk, seconded by Mr Brown, and carried—’ That with the view of getting school requisites from the Board, the Head Master be instructed to make out quantities.’
Proposed by Mr Brown, seconded by Mr Kirk, and carried—‘ That this meeting stand adjourned till the promised applications for third teacher are received from the Board, the Chairman to give due notice to members.’
