ELECTION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In an article on this subject id your issue of Saturday, 27th inst., I observe that you express the opinion that the present system of cumulative voting should be altered ; and go on. to say ‘ an effort in that direction was made by Mr Steward, of Waimate, last session, but owing to the opposition he met with he was obliged to abandon the Hill.’ Will you permit me to correct you as to this last particular. The Bill passed its second reading in the House of Representatives (Hansard, vol. 41, p. 634) without a division, and the final division in Committee (vol. 42, p. 628) showed 54 voting with me and only 12 against, and that upon quite a subsidiary question. The Bill passed through all its stages in the Lower House, and wus thrown out in the Council on the second reading by 19 to 12 votes. You will thus see that I in no sense abandoned the Bill, and 1 may add further that ic is my intention to re-introduce it, possibly with some modifications as to details, next session.—l have, etc. William J. Steward.
