The Temuka Leader. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1883 THE TOWN.
During the last 12 months we have frequently pointed out the necessity for bringing this town under the Municipal Corporations Act. In the event of being unable to do that, wo have suggested that it should be proclaimed a Town Board District, under the Town Board District Act 1881, and showed that even under the control of a Town Board it would have privileges which could not fail to have a beneficial effect. But all we could say has proved useless. We can spur on the farmers to take steps for their own and the district’s good ; theyhave manfully came forward and done wonders during the last six months. But it is useless to try to move the people of the town to do anything. We have taken them roughly ; we have taken them smoothly. We have abused them, and we have flattered them, with the hope that by some means we would he able to touch upon a spot that would drive them to activity ; but all to no purpose. We have come to the conclusion that it is quite useless to try to induce them to do anything. We have been disheartened and discouraged by the apathy with which wo are surrounded, and to this may be attributed the fact that for some time past we have remained silent on matters concerning the town, Representations have been made to us, however, to the effect that the sanitary condition of the town is ia a most, deplorable state, and we have been requested to try once more the effect of tolling the people plainly the position ol affairs. We may say indeed that we, feel no great inclination for the work, because we see how useless it is to urge Tcmuka people to do anything. Still we feel it a duty to point out to them, that the town is in a very filthy stall* unci that necessity exists for improving
its sanitary condition. This could bo done without even haring it proclaimed a Borough. The Road Board is ready the moment a petition is presented to bring a supply of water into town, provided the people will consent to be rated to the extent that will pay, we believe, half the cost. This is a well-known fact, and yet there is not sufficient public spirit in (he town to get up that petition and have a system of sewage carried out. It is evidently a waste of energy to point out to the people of Temuka what ought to be done, and so we may as well let it alone for all the good we can do.
