The Temuka Leader. THURSDAY JANUARY 25, 1883. THE PENINSULA ELECTION.
The Peninsula election lias resulted, as we anticipated, in the return of Mr Larnach by an overwhelming majority. There are worse than Mr Larnach in the House, so his election need not be looked upon as a calamity. He is a man of good standing in society, be has a moderate amount of ability, and has hot some experience as a politician. With these acquisitions, it is not a matter for surprise that ho has been elected. His opponents were not formidable. Mr Donnelly is a young •nan whose only qualification is ability. He is certainly superior to Mr Larnach in that respect, hut lie lacks the charm and eclat which monep throws around a person ;he owns no broad acres; his property has not increased in value tenfold by the expenditure of borrowed money, the interest of which the poor as well as the rich must pay, and therefore he cannot secure the confidence of the people at large. We do not suppose that Bishop Moran expected to be elected. His principal object in coming forward was to ventilate his views on educational matters, and so far he succeeded admirably. Mr Larnach had, therefore, what may be called a ‘ walk over,’ although he was the least popular of any of the candidates at the hustings. It is invariably the case that the unpopular at Die hustings gets returned. A few can disturb any meeting, and make a great deal of noise, but when it comes to the vote the thing is different. Mr Larnach is certainly rather Conservative in his views, and though, as we have already said, there are worse than he in the House, we are firmly convinced he will never be the author of any measures that will not be tinged with something tending to benefit the class to which he belongs.
