TOUGHENED GLASS.
The firm of Siemens, of Dresden, have introduced some great improvements in the manufacture of hardened crystal, so as to render it stronger and tougher than cast iron. Hardened crystal has the additional advantage of not being effected by the action of either air or water, and being very much less heavy, it is more readily handled. The articles which M. Siemens intends to supply ready-made to the trade are lamp po:ts, gas and water pipes, gratings, fencings, railings, and the like. An equal weight of hardened crystal stands in double the amount of what iron comes to, but the former being very much lighter than tho latter, a very much larger volume is obtained with the same weight, and sufficient material for constructing articles that would otherwise represent immense weights of metal. The c msequenco L that articles made of hardened crystal stand in about 30 per cent, less money than their equivalents made of cast iron, besides resisting all moterolog;cal influences and never changing in appearance, whereas iron gets rusty and may be deformed.
