ENGLISH AND FOREIGN London, Dec. 28.
The libel action by John Bell, the well-known sculptor, against Lawes, proprietor of Vanity Fair, has resulted in a verdict for the plaintiff for £SOOO damages, The libellous statement alleged that certain works shown by B'dl as his own were really those of other sculptors.

The Imperial Parliament has been summoned by. a proclamation issued this morning to meet on February 15th.
A serious disaster, resulting in the loss of thirty lives, occurred at Bradford, in Yorkshire, yesterday. The chimney of one of the large woollen factories erected in the mill yard, fell and destroyed a portion of the building. A large number of the operatives were seriously injured besides those killed.
The wool market shows a general tendency to advance. The new arrivals to date for the next series of sales amount to 50,009 bales. There are no changes to report in the markets for colonial produce. The latest particulars to hand regarding the disaster at the Bradford Woollen Mills show that thirty-six deaths were caused by the fall of the chimney, and fully fifty operatives have received injuries of a serious character.
The Bank of Australasia has issued new shares to the amount of four hundred thousand pounds.
The Times in an article to-day advises Bari Derby, Secretary of State for the Colonies, to recognise more formally than at the present the status of Colonial Agent-Generals,

In its second edition to-day, the Times announces that it is intended to divide Zululand, and appoint a British resident to both Cetewayo and John Dunn. The latter will, it is stated, he permanently assigned the Ingella district, which is how under his control.
It is announced that Gencr&l Lord Napier, of Magdala, has been appointed a Field-Marshal.
Paris, Dec. 28.
M. Gambetta is suffering "from a dangerous abcess, and his condition is cruising grave anxiety.

The latest bulletin published, reports that M. Gambetta is in a critical state, and his condition is causing grave anxiety to his medical attendants. Rome, Dec. 30.
Count de Wimpffen, the AustroHungarian Ambassador to the Italian Court, committed suicide to-day by shooting himself uith a revolver immediately after he had alighted from his carriage. It is understood that his mind was deranged.
Berlin, Dec. 29
Very severe weather has been experienced in southern Germany, and heavy floods have occurred in the Rhine valley. A bridge in Baden has been washed away, and twenty persons who were on the structure at the time have been drowned. The floods are rapidly extending, and much destruction of property is resulting. The flood waters have reached Cashel and Worms, and both places are now partially submerged.
Calcutta, Dec. 29
The Burmese Envoy has arrived at Rangoon with fresh proposals for the conclusion of an Anglo-Burmese treaty.

Sydney, Dec. 29
It bas now been ascertained that the loss of !ile by the New England disaster will not exceed eleven. No more bodies have been washed ashore. The New South Wales Government has sent assistance to Clarence River Heads, and has made arrangements for the relief of the survivors from the wreck of the New England, most of whom are in a destitute condition. Melbourne, Dec. 30.
The Victorian revenue returns for the past quarter show that the receipts for that period amounted to £1,450,900; being an increase of £76,250 compared with the corresponding quarter of last year. The revenue for the year amounted to £5,690,000, being an increase of £260,060.
