GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Council was held in Timaru yesterday. Present —Messrs C. G. Tripp (Chairman), J, C. McKerrow, J. Talbot, G. F. Clulee, W. Moody, and A. Bherratt. THE LATE. MU MENOELSON.
After the minutes had been read, Mr Talbot moved—* That this Council desire to place on record the great loss it has sustained through the death of the late Mr Julius Mendelson, and appoint the Chairman to forwatd a letter of condolence to Mrs Mendelson for the truly heartfelt loss she has sustained.’ The motion, was seconded by Mr McKerrow, and carried unanimously.” CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read from the Ashburton County Council, regretting that certain information re irrigation had not been forwarded owing to an OA'ersight. It was moved by’ Mr Moody, and seconded by Mr McKerrow —‘ That Mr F. W. Stubby be appointed Returning Officer to the Licensing Committees of this district, with power to appoint deputies when wanted.’—Carried. IRRIGATION. A quantity of correspondence, etc,, on the subject of irrigation having been read, Mr Talbot moved, Mr Clulee seconded, and it was carried— ‘ That Messrs McKerrow and Moody be appointed to look into the question as to what legal steps are necessary to be taken in order that the Council may carry out irrigation works.” After further discussion, Mr Talbot moved, Mr Sherratt seconded, and it was carried— ‘ That Messrs Marchaut and Meason’s offer be accepted at £BO, for plans and estimates of irrigation wmks on Waitohi Flat; and that in tin- "vent of the works being proceeded tviih, their offer of superintending and carrying out the works for £7O further, be also accepted,’ THE HARBOR LOAN. Proposed by Mr Talbot, seconded by Mr Clulee, and carried’unanimously—c That this Council congratulate the Harbor Board on the unanimity of feeling throughout the district, as evidenced by the result of the poll taken yesterday.’ SLAUGHTERHOUSES. Proposed by Mr Moody, seconded by Mr Clulee and earned— * That it be advertised that all slaughtering licenses must be renewed before January 1,1883, otherwise they will be liable to penalties for infringing the Act ; attention to be drawn in the advertisement to the necessity for using the forms provided by the Council for weekly returns in accordance with clause 36 of the Act.’ MISCELLANEOUS. It was decided that, proper steps for the filling of the vacancy caused by the death of the late Mr Mendelson, be taken at once.
Mr Moody moved, Mr Sherratt seconded, and it was carried —That the assessment on dogs remain as it is at present, 10s per head, and advertised as per Act of 1882, the same officers to be appointed as before. ’
Mr Talbot referred to the scarcity of domestic servants in the district. He suggested memorialising Government and asking them to depute a lady to go Home for the purpose of picking out suitable girls. He believed -1 )00 or 5000 girls might easily be got, and the country could easily absorb that number. The Clerk was authorised to write to the Colonial Secretary on the subject. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £SO J.7s Gd were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
