GERALDTNE ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held on Tuesday, the 12th December 1882, in the office, Geraldine. Present—Messrs Win. Upton Slack, Frederick R. Flatman, and Win. Deßeney. APOLOGY. A letter was received from Mr Fostiethwaite, apologising for non-attendance. chairman. On the motion of Mr Deßenzy, Mr Win. Upton Slack was voted to the chair. MINUTBS. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. TENDERS. The following tenders were opened and considered: — Contract No 45—Shingling road near Rese's : Stephen Cortncy, £B9 ; AldX. McCool, £BO ; Thomas Oorkery, £BO ; N. P. Braeeiield, £75 , Daniel Gulcian, £74 ; Frank Molloy, £7O 9s ; Brosuahuu and Nolan £OB (accepted). Contract No 40— Widening- the road from Speechley's corner to Lysaght's catting : A. McCool £l5O ; Stephen Cortney £135 ; Thomas Gregou, £124 10s ; Thomas Oorkery, £l2O : N. P. Braeeriold, £120; Joseph Webb. £JI7 15s (accepted). CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was r ,j ad and considered: — From Mr Millard, requesting the cottage to he repaired. Resolved—' That when the rent is paid his letter wtll be taken into consideration.' From Mr George Palmer, dated 11th December, stating Unit on account of illness he regrets that he was not able to pay any rent.

From Mr Win. Moore and others, dated Bth December, with reference to the proposed traffic bridge on the creek near to Russell's, objecting to the'work not being carried out on account of one of the residents objecting to it, and requesting

that the .vork be clone as decided by the Board at a former meetin .' Resolved—' That the Board call for tenders next by Board day.' From Mr Hardcastle, December 6th, with reference to his rateß due, and requesting - the Board to collect rates from the parties to whom he had sold his land.

Resolved—'That the Board cannot relieve Mr Hardcastle.' From Mr J. W. Innes, dated 11th December, asking the Board to give Mr Wigley notice to remote his gates off the road on the Opaha run. Resolved —'That the Overseer give Mr Wigley uotiee to remove certain gates iu tea days, and if not removed to order their removal at once.

Fn»m Mr Wigley, dated 27th IS ovember with reference to a notice lie has received from the Clerk to the Board to remove gates of roads on the Opuha roads, and drawing the attention of the Board to section 55 of the Fencing Act, 1881. Resolved —' That the Overseer see that the gates adjoining sections be removed, if not previously done, at the expiration of ten days ; notice to be given to Mr Wigley of the decision of the Boat«'.' From Mr Samuel Bates, dated 14th October, consenting to a road being taken through Lot 13 part of Reserve 389 as shown on the accompanying tracing. Resolved —'Thac the consent and traciug be forwarded to Mr White for completion.' From Mr White, solicitor, Tnuaru, enclosing his account, and requesting payment. Proposed by Mr Flatman, seconded by Mr Deßenzy. and carried—' That the account fiom Mr White stand orer until the work is fully completed.' From MrLongley, dated 7th December, stating that he intended to wait upon the Board with reference to title of part reserve 1056 adjoining the Railway reserve 389. Resolved —' That the matter is in course of completion.' From Dr Foster, dated 30th November, calling the Boards attention to the passing of a bye-law referring to weights passing bridges in the district before the new Road Board Act comes into operation, as it will be more difficult afterwards. Resolved —' That the Chairman be requested to sign the bye-law already prepared,' and consult with Dr Foster on the subject. From Mr T. H. Wigley, dated 9th December conseming to exchange of roads through his freehold on Opuha estate. Resolved —' That the Overseer make a tracing and forward the same to Mr Wigley, and that the Clerk ask Mr Wigley to forward his consent to exchange to the Chief Surveyor. From the Secretary to the Tunaru Harbor Board, dated Bth December, applying for the use of rate rolls and ballot boxes for taking the poll in connection with the proposal to raise a loan for Harbor works. Resolved— ' That the same be granted.' From Mr Tho? Shepherd, dated December 4, re notice to removo gorse off roads adjoining his farm stating that he had sold his farm eight months since. Resolved —' That notice be served ou present owner.' From Mr Charles Looker, dated 11th December, asking to rent one ©f the tworoomed immigrants' cottages. Resolved -' That permission be granted on condition that the rent be paid three months in advance.' From the Chief Surveyor, Christchureh, dated 29th November, asking for a return of money spent on roads to village settlements and land on deferred payment, with a view to enable Government to divide equitably a sum of money grauted for that purpose. Resolved —' That the maps be colored where work has been done, and the total ainouut forwarded as requested.' From the Temuka Road Board, dated 9th December; asking for amount of rates collected by the Board from property situate between the Great South Road and the railway station from Orari to South Rangitata Railway station. Resolved —' That the amount be handed over when collected.' From Messrs Harm an and Stevens, Christchureh, dated 24th November, asking the Board to stop the road iudicated on tracing forward near Siuithfield. From Messrs Harper and Co., dated 27th November, as attorneys for the owner adjoiniug the said road consenting to the stoppage of the said road.' Resolved —' That the lequcst be granted.' Proposed by Mr Flatman, seconded by Mr Deßenzy and carried —' That in the matter of unpaid rates, one defaulter each from A to Z be sued after seven days from dati* of publication.' MISCELLANEOUS. The Overseer's report was read and considered. All things being satisfactory, no comment is necessary. The Inspector of Nuisances' report, was read and approvsd, the sanitary state of the district beirg good. Messrs Connelly, Skinner and Cochrane attended pcjsonally to ask the Board to' improve the road from Speechley's to ltedcliff. Resolved— ' That the Overseer report upon the same.' Accounts to the amount of £7lO 1-Ss were passed for payment. The Clerk was instructed to advertise a meeting of ratepayers to elect a member in the room of Mr John GodaeH, whose seat is rendered vacant by absence from four meetings. ~ > % The Board then adjourned until Tuesday, the 9th January, 1883, at noon.
