MECHANICS' INSTITUTE.
The regular monthly meeting of the above Institute was held on Tuesday, December 12. Present—Messrs J. S. Hayes (President), Gray, O'Halloran, McSheeby-Gentlemun, Ashwell, and Lawson.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
The Librarian's report, enclosing; 17s 6d, amount of subscriptions for the month, and a request that a short fence might be erected to enclose the garden in front of the Institute, was read and considered. Accounts Were passed for payment. He the fence, it was proposed by Mr Gray, seconded by Mr O'Halloran and carried—'That it be done, and that the arrangement of the details be left to the President.' A list of the papers at present taken by the Institute was handed in by the Librarian. The Secretary was instructed to write to Messrs Steel and Jones to supply the Weekly Freeman from April Ist 1883. With that exception it was decided, on the motion of Mr Gray, seconded by Mr McSheeby-Gentlemun—• That the list remain unaltered.' It was resolved—' That Messrs Rout and Jones be asked if they will kindly audit the accounts of the Institute for the year ending December 31, 1882.' Mr Gray proposed, and Mr McSheebyGentlemun seconded—' That the President, Treasurer and Secretary be appointed to draw up the annual report, aud call a special Committee meeting to consider to consider it when completed.'
It was unanimously resolved—' That the Committee place on record their sincere regret at the loss they have sustained, by the death ot Mr Julius Mendelson, one of their most active members.'
