The Temuka Leader THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1882. THE DAIRY FACTORY.

Those who were opposed to the starting of the Butter and Cheese Factory in this district, and who, by their opposition, crippled it to a great extent, will we are sure be glad to learn that they were altogether wrong in their calculations. An enquiry into the way the Ashburton Factory is working has led to information being obtained, that it is paying 4d ner gallon for milk and that even at this price there are many farmers making at the rate of £2 per month per cow. We are assured that this information is correct, and that it is not jone, two, or three, but several farmers that are receiving £2 every month, for each of their cows. It would be very handy for a farmer who had ten cows milking to be receiving £2O per month for them. We should advise farmers living in districts too far distant from the Temuka Factory to combine'togothcr and try to get branch Factories established in their own localities. They would not cost much, and the same price would be got for milk as in the chief Factory. The Factory in Temuka will be ready by the beginning of next season, and we think that a branch at Waitohi, and another somewhere on the Geraldine Flat, that would take in the Kakahu and Geraldine districts, would do well. At all events, we would recommend farmers interested in these districts to enquire into the matter, and see whether it would not be worth their while to be ready to start simultaneously with the Temuka Factory; The course for them to adopt is to take up shares in the Company at present in existence, and if they do so we feel confident that the Directors will be only two happy to build branches for them. Wo hear also that the farmers in the Ashburton district are calling upon the Directors of the Company to increase their capital to £15,000 so as to erect branches elsewhere. The same thing ought to be done in Temuka. We believe that Mr Bowron, who has had a life-long experience of butter and cheese factories, will deliver a lecture in this town before long, and it might bo well worth while for farmers to come and hear him.
