Dr Beaney has instituted an action at law against the proprietors of the Aigus for having published an article commenting unfavorably upon his public career in connection with the election proceedings. Damages are laid at £10,060.

The National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand report the following as the latest market quotations Nothing is doing in malting barley, and prices nominal. Shipping wheat is decidedly firmer at 5s fid. New Zealand oats (duty paid) are weaker at 3s 9d to 4s 2d for feeding qualities, and 4s 3d to 4s 4d for milling do. There is rather more enquiry for New Zealand oats in bond, and prices are less depressed. Piescnt quotations range from 3s 4d to 3s Bd. Prime hams are in pood demand at and there is a fair demand lor hicon at Bd. Owing to the recent in avy lain business has been dill, and the had weather has hindered t ie j regress ol operatn n> in the grain districts.
