HIS FIRST LOVE.
The words, ' I love you,' are exceedingly simple when said at home ; but try to say them in the back parlor seated next to the one you adore, and the thing is quite different. You feel a choking sensation, the larynx of the throat pushes itself up almost into your mouth, and your heart goes pit-pat like a young lamb's tail. This was our friends, John Taylor's experience. He was a clerk at Middlesbro'. He was at first intended for the ministry at Harrogate, but fortune and the railway train
brought him to work at Middlesbio'. John loved ; and tried to tell his affection. With spotless white front and collar (paper), he sought the house of Angelina. It was his third trial. For two hours he tried to talk about his object, but in vain. At last he said : ' Angelina, has it ever struck you that I must feel lonely ?' ' Lor, John ; you don't say so,' was the reply. ' I mean, dear, did you ever think I wanted some company to protect me, take care of the house when I'm away, and keep me home at nights V ' Well, John,' said Angelina. ' now I think of it, father wants to sell our dog, Charley ; he is a fiipt-class one, and you can have him for three-and-six-pence.'
