TEMUKA A SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A special meeting of the above Committee was held last Thursday evening at which MessrsMackay (Chairman), Bolton, Davis, Brown and Russell, were present. A letter was read from Mr Bethuuo tenderhis resignation as second teacher, on account of leaving the district, and asking for a testimonial. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Bolton, seconded by Mr Brown— ‘ That this Commitee recommend the Board of Education to accept Mr Bethunc’s resignation, and that the testimonial asked for be given.’ The Ch-.irman proposed that Mrs Rowe should be appointed to the vacancy caused by Mr Bethune’s resignation, and it was seconded by Mr Mendelson’s pro forma. Mr Mendelsou at the same time thought it would be better to have a male teacher, as he would bs better able to maintain order in the school during the absence of the head teacher. Mr Bolton suggested that the usual course should be followed, viz., to ask the Bourd to invite applications, when no doubt Mrs Rowe would apply. He expressed astonishment at the complete change which had taken place in the opin ous of . those members who at a caucus meeting had decided on ths recent alterations in the teaching staff, more especially as the petition sent by the householders to the committee had been laughed at by the same members who now suggested the change. Mr Davis thought this continual changing was liable to do harm to the school, and that those who were responsible for the recent change would become the laughing-stock of the householders.
Mr Mendelson thought it would be better to ask the Board to invite applications, and the Chairman’s motion was withdrawn. Mr Mendelson then moved— ‘ That the Board ef Education be requested to invite applications for the vacant position, and it was agreed to. The Chairman next brought up the question of giving prizes to the successful candidates at the next examination, and stated that books, etc., could now be obtained cheap from Mr Macdonald, agent for the Otago Bible Society, now in town. He thought a portion of the incidental fund might be devoted to it.
It was thought inadvisable that any portion of the incidental fund should bs set apart O' tb-.r, purpose, and Mr Mendelsan suggested that a juvenile entertainment should be got up for the purpose of raising the necessary funds. Mr Bel on did not bdieve in giving prizes, as only two or three in each class would receive them, which caused great dissatisfaction amongst the children, but surges'ed that sports and tea be got up, so that all might enjoy themselves. After some further consideration it was resolved —‘ That a subscription list be given to each member for the purpose of obtaining funds to get prizes for the children,” and the Chairman and Mr Brown were authorised to expend ton pounds in that direction. The meeting then terminated.
