MELBOURNE MARKETS.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited), under date Melbourne, October 11th, attributes the quiet state of the Australian markets to the well-known objection of the trade to purchase in excess of immediate wants when tire new harvest is in sight. Adelaide flour sells at £ls 15s for the best town brands, and £l4los for country; Victoria at £l4 10s to £ls, according to brand. In Adelaide the price of wheat is Gs 3d. Flour ranges up to £l4 10s for town makes, and £l3 5a to £l3 10s for country. Accounts from the agricultural districts are not favorable, and in the north particularly we hear of great complaints of the dryness of the season. The crops are languishing, and the few showers which have fallen have only partially relieved farmers’ wants. In some districts we hear of gloomy anticipations of the out-turn, hut as a rule, except in one or two very dry situations, there is yet ample time for recovery. The deliveries of the wheat and flour by tail show little alteration during the week rnding 7th October. They cover 3672 eags as compared with 10,073 bags for bhe coirespondinghveek last year, and and 8349 bags for the same period in 1880.
Wheat is quoted at 6s lOd to Gs lid. At oar sale to-day we effected a clearance of a few lots, consisting mainly of balances, for which we obtained up to Gs 04d. The town millers, being for the moment in stock, do not exhibit much disposition to operate except at a concession.
Oats are quoted at is 5d for medium stout feed, and 4s 6d and 4s 7d for good to prime. Inferior are selling at 4s Id to 4s sd.
Barley is quoted at os I4d and 5s 4id
DUNEDIN MARKETS,
In fat cattle last week’s quotations were fully supported, with good competition. Bullocks brought from £8 10s to £l3 15s, and cows up to £lO 10s. Beef may be quoted at from 27s 6d to 30s per lOOlbs, There was a full supply of fat sheep, but last week’s high rates were nearly maintained, cross-breds selling up to 17s 6d, and merinos to 15s 3d. Mutton is quoted at 2|d per lb.
Grain Market.—Wheat. —Millers are believed to be low in stock, but continue to hold off from purchasing in the hope of buying at reduced quotations, of which however, there are no indications at present. Sales of milling wheat are therefore very much restricted. Fowl feed sells feely though not quite up to recent prices by auction, qh Monday 362 bags fowls wheat brought 2s 9d to 3s lid, and 450 bags milling 4s to 4s 81d, which will sufficiently indicate present values. Oats At auction 1300 bags good short feed oats brought 3s to 3s 3id, on which figures buyers show no disposition to advance. In the meantime the market may be reported firm thereat. Inferior and discolored, 2s lOd to 3s Id, without demand. lu barley there is no change to report.
