Melbourne, Oct. 23.
T he Marquis ot .Norma nby received a telegram yesterday announcing the death of his mother, the Dowager Marchioness of Norman by, aged 84. The schooner Yarra, bound from Newcastle to Melbourne, became a total wreck at three o’clock this morning. All on board have been saved.
The death is announced of Mr John Hydes, the well-known actor.

Serious floods Lave occurred at Benign ira on the river of that name, 84 miles S.W. of Melbourne. Three persons have been drowned by the inundation of their homes.
At tb.e Police Court to-day Mr Win. Hill, manager of ihe Colonial Bank of Australasia at Becdy Creek, was committed for trial on a charge of being concerned in the robbery which was committed at that branch on the I2th August last.

EGYPTIAN AFFAIRS
London, Oct. 22, A Military Commission has been appointed to enquire into the cause of the defects which were apparent in the army hospital and transport services during the recent operations of the British troops in Egypt.

In consequence of witnesses having been examined by special Commission at Cairo, in the absence of Arab! and his associates, or their legal advisers, the enquiry before the Commission will be reopened on Saturday next. Counsel employed to defend Arabi have secured the right of cross-examin-ing witnesses, and it is certain that Arabi and ids fellow prisoners will receive a fair trial.
Sir Garnet Wolseley has sailed for England. Under the scheme of reorganisation drawn up for the Egyptian Government by Baker Pasha, one half of the officers in the army will in future be Englishmen.
