EGYPTIAN AFFAIRS.
London, Oct. 9, The treatment of Arabi while in custody is considered to be harsh. He is in constant dread of treachery. Numbers of the French officials who left Egypt during the crisis, are returning to claim the offices vacated by them. Oct, 10. It is understood that the British Government has not yet formulated any proposal for the final settlement of the Egyptian question, but that the Powers are being sounded as to their views, pending the final settlement of affaii s in Egypt. Alexandria, Oct. 10. The embarkation of British troops for England, and the Indian contingent for Bombay, is being rapidly proceeded with, and the transports are leaving daily for their destinations. An inquiry has been opened here into the circumstances attending the outbreak and massacre which occurred in this citadel. The Egyptian Government demurs to allowing the rebel officers, who are shortly to be placed upon their trial, to be defended by English or other European counsel. Oct. 11. The new army which is About to be organised under the direction of Baker Pasha will be limited to 10,000 men, and will be officered only by Circassians and Turks. Commissions will not be given to any officer who took part in the recent rebellion. Later rumors are to hand from Cairo that Arabi has been maltreated in prison, and Sir Edward Malet, British Consul-General, is consequently causing enquiries to be made as t« their truth or otherwise. A seizure of a considerable number of concealed arms has been made at Tantah. An Arab sheik at Tantah, who has been inciting the populace to acts of lawlessness, has been arrested and subjected to one hundred lashes. Later. Inquiries which have been made into the allegations that Arabi has been maltreated in prison, have proved the reports to be without foundation.
