ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Oct. 6. A daring attempt to shoot a grazier and two land agents has b«en made near Ballnia, County Mayo, Ireland. Th« shots fired were unsuccessful, and the intended victims escaped. No clue has yet been obtained to the perpetrate!s of the outrages. It is now officially announced that Sir Julian Pauucefete is to be the legal Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, vice Lord Tenterden, deceased, Oct, 9. Mr Andrew Marshall Porter, Q.C., will succeed Mr Johnson as AttorneyGeneral for Ireland. The Governor of Schik, in Siberia, has been murdered. The Homeward mails, via Suez and. Brindisi, which left Melbourne on August 29th, were delivered here to-day. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, is unchanged at 475, and New Zealand ditto at 42s t 0.465. Adelaide flour, ex st«re, is quoted at 335. Serious faction riots are reported to have occurred at Arles, a town situated in the south-east of France. New York, Oot. 6. The newspaper, the Irish World, has closed the fund which was being raised for the Land League, and, in doing so, has declared that that organisation is now defunct. Capetown, Oct. 6. Colonel Gordon (Gordon Pasha) has resigned his position as Commandant of the Cape forces, owing to a difference with the Peal Government. — AUSTRALIAN CABLE, Melbourne, Oct. 9. The police have effected the capture of the second of the two men who attempted to rob the Commercial Bank of Australia at A venal, on the fith inift,
a nd who escaped into the bush when his accomplice was arrested. The man was identified in the city to-day, and taken into custody.
