EGYPTIAN AFFAIRS.
London, Oct. 3. The British troops are embarking on their return home. Fifty members of the Indian force proceed to England to personally receive medals from the Queen. The English Government are negotiating for a European Conference on Egyptian affairs, to be held in London. The Tirms states that the Highland Brigade and fire other regiments will remain as a garrison at Cairo. The trial of Arabi commenced to-day before the Commission. Oct. 4. A grand military fete is being organised at Cairo. The health of the army in Egypt is generally bad. A great fire has occured at Smyrna, causing immense destruction to prorei ty. Colonel Valentine Baker baa proposed to the Egyptian Governmenr to recruit the army by the enlistment of Albanians. Oct. 5. The Times publishes a telegram in this morning's issue to the effect that officers possess documentary evidence of Arabi's complicity in the massacre of Europeans of Alexandria and other places. Alexandria, Oct. 2. A considerable number of European and other refugees, who left Egypt at the time of the outbreak in June last, are now returning to their homes. Sir Garnet Wolseley ip expected to leave Egypt on the 20 th inst. It has transpired that it has been decided that the brigades under Sir Evelyn Wood and Sir Archibald Alison shall remain in the occupation of Egypt. Oct. 5. The embarkation of troops no longer required hare will be carried on continuously from to-day. The preliminary enquiry into the recent rebellion is now proceeding, and a large amount of evidence has been taken by the Royal Commission appointed by the Khediye to conduct the prosecution of the rebel officers. Constantinople, Oct. 4. It has transpired that the Sultan has pressed Lord Dufferin to state definitely the date upon which the British troops will be withdrawn from Egypt, and declares that he will appeal to the Powers unless the British Government arrive at an early decision in the matter.
