COMMERCIAL.
On Wednesday laat Mr K F. Gray held a very successful sale of live and dead stock at his yards, Temuka, and considering the slow state of the market the prices realised were very Batisfactory. He sold 300 fat sheep (mixed) at 14s 3d ; 25 head 2-year-old steers, at £4 15s each ; 20 18-tnonths steers, at £3 ; 20 yearlings, £1 15s.
At Winchester Fair, on Thursday last, the yards were full of stock, but buyers were not numerous, and, comparatively speaking, little business was done. Mr Gray sold a. line of fat she»p at 14s 6d.
Messrs Maclean and Stewart sold some fat sheep at 15s 3d, and 300 broken, mouthed merinos, at 4s Gd. The cattle were very slow. lh« New Zealand Loau and Mercantile Agency Company's (Limited) circular, which reached us yesterday, reports as follows: WOOL. ' 'The progress of the sales in London, as cabled out each day, has latterly not been of that satisfactory character which the early portion of the series gave promise of ; a weaker demand, diminishing activity, and drooping rate?, appear amongst the items of intelligence lately received. This is the more disappointing, because it must be well known in London that the result of the shearing now progressing in Australia discloses a deficiency of 10 to 20 per cent on the clip of 1881. The nocks throughout this Colony look well, and give indications of yielding large and sound fleeces. Shearing operations are now commencing in the North Island, and will be in full swing ere we. write again."

In Ohristchurch quotations are nominally 4s 7d to 4s 9d f o. b. for prime mil-li'-'g ; 4s 4d to 4s Gd for ordinary ; 4s to 4s 3d for seconds, and 3s 3d to 3s 9d for chick-feed. Ihe demand for flour has considerably abated, and stocks are accumulating on millers' hands. Several parcels have gone forward to Australia, and they understand some heavy shipments thence are contemplated during the current month.
In Tiinaru the trade dining the past month has been brisk, but prices show a downward tendency ; the)' placed several large parcels at up to 4s Gil for Tuscan, 4s oM for red chaff and velvet, all prime camples, ex store. Stocks are now running low, In Dunedin they quote prime milling up to 5s ; medium, 4s to 4s 9d ; inferior and fowl feed, 2s 6d to 4s. As high as 6s has been paid for seed purposes. OATS. In Ohristchurch a steady trade for local requirements has been carried through, and a strong demand within the past few days has elicited the facts that stocks are extremely slender, and prices must harden. They have quitted inferior samples at 2s lid, whilst for good feed 3s 2d, ex store, is obtainable. In Dunedin there is very little enquiry excepting for good bright heavy oats, but asnone are offering we have no business to record. Present prices may be given as follows—prime milling, 3s 2d to 3s 3d ; bright feed, 3s Id to 3s 2d; medium, 2s 6d to 2s lid.
