THE NIGHT SIDE OF LONDON.
The London correspondent of the South Australian Advertiser says : More wonderful far than the wealth of the West is the wretchedness of the East. There are 100,000 gutter children in London ; they have no parents, or as good as none ; no homes, or next to none. Acres upon acres of crowded houses you see with scarce breathing room between them. England extends her charitable help and philantrophic efforts to other countries, but she neglects the more pressing and crying wants of her own East London streets. But I can only hint at these things. The other evening I was passing at 11 o'clock beneath the shade of St Paul's—grand monument of rich religion. A tiny match boy bigs me t o buy a box for a Id. ' Why is he oul so late ?' I ask. He has been out all day, and only made a penny, and cannot go home till he has threepence. ' Why ?' ' Because mother is ill, and we haye no food.' c What have you had to eat today V ' A slice of bread when I got up.' ' Nothing since ?' ' No.' What could my paltry copper or two do in a case like this ? The child was sincere ; I took care to prove that. And that is but one case of many that have come under my individual notice. What of the 100,000 gutter children ?
