TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held last Tuesday, all the members being present. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £2GO 9s Id were passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. L/etters were read from Mr A. Russell asking permission to erect a verandah to his house in Wilkin street. Granted, subject to approval. From Mr Longney complaining of gorse growing on the boundary road at Winchester.
The Surveyor was instructed to take the necessary steps in the matter. From Mr W, Sherwood Raine, of Norlands, asking the Board to clear the drains from Rhodes’ creek or Rolleston’s corner t» the outlet; also, drain on the road between sections 1400 and 939. The Board considered that the drains referred to did no damage to the road,and therefore would not undertake to have them cleared.
From Mr H. Hulleu and Mr P. T. Orr, asking that the road leading down to the terrace be made passable for a threshing machine. The Surveyor was instructed to report on tiie matter.
From Mr Rolleston, complaining of the road near his land. Tenders were ordered to be called for the work.
From Mr Gunn, calling attention to the state of th« ford oo the Orari, which had been excavated by recent floods ; also to the necessity of raising the road near the embankment, where a pool of water generally lodges. From Mr E. Griffiths, on the same subject.
The Surveyor was authorised to design such work as may be deemed necessary, cost not to exceed £ , and call for tenders.
From the County Council, asking the co-operation of the Board in procuring a map of the whole county, the cost not to exceed £SO to the Board. The Chairman doubted whether it would be of much value to the Board. There were five Boards in the district,and if «ach of them gave £SO that would make £250. If the Council gave another £250 they would have £SOO to get a map out. Mr Barker, Mr Ensor, Mr Paterson, and Mr Austin ail agreed that it would be of.'no use, that they would not want it oncejin a life time, and it was resolved—- “ That the Board are of opinion that no sufficient advantage would result by having a county map to warrant the expenditure asked for.”
From Messrs Bissett, Stewart, and Gladstone, asking the Board to form the Mill road before the grain season. The matter was dealt with in the Engineer’s report. tenders. The following tenders were opened:— Contract No 25, shingling Waitohi road —No tenders. Contract No 26—M. O’Connor, Is lid (accepted) ; M. Dunn, 2s 2Jd ; J, Wilkinson, 2s 4d ; F. Mulloy, 2s 8M per yard. Contract No 27, shingling Grant’s road —M. Dunn, Is 8M (accepted); F. Mulloy, Is lT£d per yard. Contract No 38, shingling Davis and Vincent streets— Deferred owing to price being too high. Contract No 29, shingling Ohapi Swamp Road—E Counihan, Is o|d (accepted) : D. W. Philips, Is o|d ; M. Dunn, Is Id ;H. Elkers, Is 2d ; J. E. Ackroyd, Is ;J. Wilkinson, Is 2d ; M. O’Connor, Is 3d per yard. Contract No 30, forming Ray’s road— Deferred, owing to rale being too high.
Fresh tenders were ordered to be called for the Ohapi road, the spec’fications to be made out providing shingle to be got from Paterson’s and Sullivan’s.
Mr Ensor brought forward the necessity of shingling Clyne’s road, and stated that Mr Maze would sell the shingle at 4d per yard.
It was resolved —‘ That the work be deferred until the shingle enn be obtained from the nearest gravel pit.’ NATES. The Surveyor reported that he had collected £430 8s 10d, and that there was £484 Is 04d still uncollected. The South Orari Board of Conservators had collected £62 2s Bd, and there was still uncollected £IOO 10s 6d. The Surveyor w"is instructed to sue for rates not paid within 14 days. SURVEYOR'S REPORT. The Surveyor reported that he had measured the drain opposite Mr [Greenaway’s land at the Orari, and posted to him an account for £23 11s, being 25 per cent of the cost; and also ‘served gorse notices. He would suggest that the Waitohi road, from the part tendered for to that already

at Sharp’s corner to the foot of the Downs, a distance of about 50 chains; the breaking of stones on boundary road from (ho Hae-hae-te-moana to the Geraldine road ; the formation of Gladstone road from the shingled part to its junction with Penny’s road.
It was decided to buy 2000 feet of timber from Mr Brown at 15s per 100 feet, if first class ; to defer the works recommended on the Friei’s, Milford road, ami Sharp’s corner ; to have the stones broken recommended, and to form the road from Ohapi creek to Gladstone’s, from thence to the part already shingled. CLERICAL ASSISTANCE. The Chairman stated that the work in the office had been very satisfactorily done, and there was no further necessity for clerical assistance. CORSE ON ROADS. The Chairman and Surveyor were authorised to sue persons neglecting to comply with order re gorse cutting. ADJOURNMENT. The Board then adjourned.
